PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rodger Crowe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Melvin Cronkite (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cronkite is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Croc song!. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rodger Crowe! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Melvin Cronkite! The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Micheangelo Fripello and Josh West.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cronkite is trying hard to land a takedown here. Crowe sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Crowe has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Dark Violence Systems in the buildup to the fight. Cronkite looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Crowe slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Cronkite trying to control the position from guard on top but Crowe is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Cronkite is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Crowe is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Crowe knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cronkite on the ground. Cronkite working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Cronkite trying to control the position from guard on top but Crowe is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Crowe is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Cronkite slips nicely into half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cronkite working over Crowe with some ground and pound. Crowe looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Cronkite missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Crowe controlling the position for now. Cronkite throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Cronkite is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Crowe sees it coming and defends easily. Cronkite seems to be working for a kimura but Crowe defends the submission attempt. Crowe regains full guard. Nicely done. Crowe trying to keep a closed guard but Cronkite is proving a slippery customer.
Cronkite wants to control from the top but Crowe keeps moving. Crowe has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Cronkite is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Crowe's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Cronkite takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
It looks like Melvin Cronkite has been cut. Crowe lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent. Cronkite fails to land the takedown. Cronkite shoots for a double leg takedown but Crowe sprawls well. He's pushed Cronkite's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Rodger Crowe has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Melvin Cronkite. Crowe bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Cronkite's head backwards. Cronkite shoots in for a takedown but Crowe shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Crowe misses with a hook. Cronkite ducked under it nicely. A swing and a miss from Crowe. Cronkite dives in and grabs Crowe's left leg, looking for a takedown. Crowe pushes down on Cronkite's head and hops out. Crowe keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Crowe stuffs the takedown. Crowe throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Cronkite. Cronkite shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Crowe manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Crowe can't keep his opponent in guard - Cronkite advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Crowe really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Crowe is looking to improve his position.
Cronkite trying to control the action but Crowe is working from the bottom. Crowe makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Crowe. Crowe wants to sweep but no luck. Cronkite looking to pass the guard. Cronkite throws a big right hand that misses. Cronkite looking to pass the guard. Crowe not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cronkite trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Cronkite with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Crowe manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Cronkite manages to get himself to full guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Cronkite is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Cronkite performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Cronkite trying to control the action but Crowe is working from the bottom. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Crowe is controlling Cronkite's position as best he can from this difficult position. Crowe is looking for a sweep. Cronkite is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Rodger Crowe will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Melvin Cronkite's cut. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
A jab from Crowe misses. Cronkite closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Crowe's guard. Cronkite looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Cronkite drops back looking for a leg! Crowe is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Crowe manages to kick Cronkite off! Cronkite jumps back into Crowe's guard. Crowe is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Cronkite scoring with some ground and pound. Cronkite forces his way into half guard. Cronkite seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Crowe does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Crowe on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Crowe tries to get out of the position. Cronkite moves into full mount! Crowe won't be happy about that! Cronkite with a couple of short strikes.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cronkite lands a couple of good shots and Crowe has given up his back, trying to escape the position! Cronkite somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back. Crowe tries to break free.
Crowe trying to control but not successfully. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Crowe holding both Cronkite 's hands and preventing any damage. Crowe surviving as best he can, preventing damage. Crowe has his hands over his head blocking the strikes from Cronkite. Cronkite is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Crowe has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Cronkite patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here?
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cronkite controlling from the back. Cronkite has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Cronkite tightening his grip on Crowe, looking for the choke. The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Cronkite. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man. Cronkite is hanging on to Crowe's back as he tries to escape.
Crowe looking to stop the rear naked choke attempt by controlling the hands. Cronkite is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Crowe knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Crowe for a finish. Cronkite working for a choke but Crowe is defending well. Cronkite is landing with strikes from the back. Crowe covers up after taking a massive shot to the side of the head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cronkite looking to break Crowe's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Crowe remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Cronkite will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke! Melvin Cronkite has got the better of the ground game so far. Cronkite lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Cronkite.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Crowe defending nicely against the rear naked choke attempt.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Cronkite looking for the RNC. Crowe showing good submission defense here.
Cronkite is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Crowe taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Cronkite.
