PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Squid Ward (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andrew Gurecki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Squid Ward has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Squid Ward!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Andrew Gurecki!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Winston Howard and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ward throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Ward shoots for a takedown but Gurecki saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Ward throws a leg kick but Gurecki moved away.

Gurecki feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Ward has a closed guard, preventing Gurecki from standing up.
Ward pulls Gurecki in close to his closed guard and prevents Gurecki from doing any damage or advancing position.
Ward has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Gurecki wants to stand but Ward has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gurecki is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Squid Ward wasn't doing enough on the ground.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Ward is looking for a triangle but Gurecki pushes his legs off easily.
Gurecki wants to stand but Ward has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Gurecki is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Ward not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ward is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Gurecki throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Ward moves into the clinch.

Ward drags the fight down to the ground.
Ward will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Gurecki scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Ward bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Gurecki's guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Ward postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ward accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Gurecki can do anything to dispel that myth.
Gurecki wants to sweep here but Ward controlling him for the moment.

Ward is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ward is in close to Gurecki's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Ward has gone for a leg lock! Gurecki slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ward's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Gurecki is looking to advance position but Ward has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Ward wants to finish this one by submission but Gurecki is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Ward.
Gurecki is working to get back to half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Ward is landing with some decent strikes but Gurecki is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Squid Ward dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Ward throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land.
Ward throws a head kick but Gurecki moves out of range.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Gurecki lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Ward has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Ward and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Ward fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Gurecki shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Ward napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Ward sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Ward trying to control from the bottom.
Gurecki is looking to take a break and control but Ward is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Ward keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Ward slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gurecki wants to stand and escape but instead Ward has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Ward stops Gurecki from standing up.
Ward scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Gurecki is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Gurecki is breathing heavily.
Ward stands and throws Gurecki's legs to the side, diving into side control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Ward has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Gurecki is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Ward yanks on the arm and Gurecki is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Ward.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:23 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Squid Ward!
A relieved looking Squid Ward thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
