PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matt Old (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shawn Cote (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Matt Old looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Matt Old!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Shawn Cote!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Reed Andrews and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Old shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Cote as he avoids it easily.

Cote clinches up against the cage.

Cote's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Cote lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Old backs up against the cage.
Old definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Cote has closed the distance and engaged Old in a clinch.
Cote effectively controlling the action here.

Cote jumps guard and drags Old to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Old being controlled here momentarily.
Old has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Old wants to control from the top but Cote keeps moving.
Cote not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Cote is pulling down on Old's head. It's preventing any offense from Old, at least for the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Shawn Cote was stalling too much, according to the referee.
The fight stays on the outside here - Cote looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Cote has taken the fight to the clinch.
Old is working for takedown but Cote is calmly controlling the position for now.

Cote escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Cote has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Cote shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Old but Old pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Cote tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Cote throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Old tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Cote is in Old's guard.
Cote connects with a couple of short punches.
Old is trying to keep Cote in close.

Cote not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cote wants to control from the top but Old keeps moving.
Cote forces his way into half guard.
Old is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Cote scores with a couple of nice shots.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Old is looking for a sweep. Cote is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Old has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Cote is working away from the top position though.

Old tries to roll over but Cote keeps him under control.

Cote throwing shots but Old is blocking nicely.
Cote passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Old!
Old is desperately trying to improve his position but Cote has a good base and remains in mount.

Cote get's back to his feet.

Cote tries to score a power double leg takedown but Old sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Cote somewhat.

Cote has closed the distance and engaged Old in a clinch.
Cote stalling the fight.

Cote has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Old regains guard immediately.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Cote decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Old, up you get!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Cote moves into the clinch.

Cote jumps guard.
Cote trying to keep a closed guard but Old is proving a slippery customer.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shawn Cote dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Old closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Cote's guard.
Cote working a defensive guard here.
Old working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Old looking to sit in guard and control but Cote gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Cote trying to control the position from guard on top but Old is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

You can see the frustration on Old's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Old is not content to let Cote control the position.
Old might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Cote throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Cote working away.
Cote working the head and body with strikes.

Cote wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Old, who protects the arm well.
Cote trying to control the action but Old is working from the bottom.

Cote decides to stand up, so the ref orders Old to his feet.
Old tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Cote tries for a takedown but Old circles away easily
and Old counters with a straight right hand.
Old doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Cote counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Nice takedown defense from Old. No joy for Cote on that attempt.
Cote scores with a jab to the body.
Cote shoots in for a double leg but Old sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Matt Old has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Shawn Cote.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Cote is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Old goes for a double leg but Cote avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Cote continues to drive forward.

Cote lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Old!
Cote tries to control but Old wriggling away.
Cote is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cote is landing with some decent strikes but Old is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Shawn Cote showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Cote is working for a guillotine from mount but Old frees his head quite easily.
The referee warns Old that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

Cote prevents Old from getting the reversal.
Cote scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Cote trying to control but Old is having none of it.
Cote might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Old haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Old is bucking up trying to escape but Cote cracks him with another couple of good strikes.


Old is rocked!

Cote cracks Old with a big head shot that has him covering up instantly! He's rolled onto his side and the referee has seen enough - this one is aaaaaaaaaaall over!
