PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Zach Gates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daiki Tanimoto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Zach Gates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Daiki Tanimoto!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tanimoto throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Tanimoto pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Gates scores with a jab to the jaw.
Zach Gates seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gates swings and misses with a hook to the body.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Gates.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Gates tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Gates has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Tanimoto wants to control but Gates postures up.

Gates is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Tanimoto knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Tanimoto is looking to control Gates's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Tanimoto avoid being mounted?

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Tanimoto bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Tanimoto postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Gates is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Tanimoto, into his guard.

Gates will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Gates wants to take his opponent's back but Tanimoto doesn't allow it.

Gates shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Tanimoto napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Tanimoto looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Tanimoto has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Gates can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Gates seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Tanimoto for as long as he can get away with.

Tanimoto throws a sloppy head kick and Gates moves out of range easily.
Gates moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Tanimoto tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gates sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Tanimoto somewhat.

Gates takes a swing at Tanimoto's ribcage but misses.
Gates scores with a nice right hand.
Tanimoto throws a leg kick but Gates moved away.
The fighters circle momentarily. Gates darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Gates dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Tanimoto wants to clinch up but Gates keeps it at a distance.
Gates scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
A looping hook to the body misses from Gates. Tanimoto does a little dance to reset his feet.

Gates seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Zach Gates.
Tanimoto shoots in but Gates avoids the takedown attempt easily.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Gates lands a nice hook to Tanimoto's body. Tanimoto takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.

Gates lands a left and a right that send Tanimoto crashing to the mat, dazed. Gates thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!

Gates is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.

Tanimoto dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Gates. That did some damage!

Tanimoto takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Gates fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Tanimoto looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Tanimoto doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Gates bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Tanimoto's head.
Gates is looking to wear down Tanimoto with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Gates fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Tanimoto to the ground. Gates is now in Tanimoto's guard.

Gates drops back, looking for a kneebar! Tanimoto looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Tanimoto looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Tanimoto!

Gates takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Well Gates has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A very excited looking Zach Gates rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
Daiki Tanimoto was interviewed post fight and said 'Battle Lost but the War continues... Team Goroshi - Aplha-Male Supplements'.
