Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Pentti Pena! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Peter Woodhall! The judges for this bout are James Glass, Richard Clark and Donald Grub.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Woodhall looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Pena throws a right and a left that Woodhall avoids nicely. Pena takes a swing at Woodhall's ribcage but misses. Pena closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Woodhall to the mat! Woodhall manages to get full guard. Pena stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Woodhall swivels though and keeps the full guard. Woodhall is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Pena pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Woodhall is keeping the position for now. Pena passes into half guard. Pena is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Pena looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Woodhall wants to get back to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pena passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Woodhall! Woodhall is working to get back to half guard.
Woodhall defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Pena. Woodhall wants to hold on but Pena pushes him away. Woodhall really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Pena wants to take Woodhall's back here but Woodhall is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.
Pena goes for an armbar but Woodhall turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Woodhall. Pena wants to sweep here but Woodhall controlling him for the moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pena is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Pena frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Pena is breathing heavily. Pena jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Woodhall manages to avoid the submission attempt. Woodhall is looking for a sweep. Pena tries for a kimura but Woodhall is defending well. Woodhall is looking for a sweep. Pena is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Woodhall is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Woodhall wants to control but Pena postures up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Woodhall tries to buck Pena off but Pena is having none of it. Pena working away. Woodhall tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Pena wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Pena jabs at Woodhall's body. Pena's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Pena duly obliges. Pena connects with a jab. Pentti Pena seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A nice combination there by Pena.
Pena scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction. Pena lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Woodhall needs to keep his hands up - Pena had a free shot at his head there. Woodhall walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Pena lands a with a good body shot. This has been an exciting period of action! Pena connects with a crisp jab.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Woodhall gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Pena drops back looking for a leg! Woodhall is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Woodhall manages to kick Pena off! Pena jumps back into Woodhall's guard. Pena pushes down on Woodhall's leg and manages to get into half guard. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Pena wants to work for an arm triangle but Woodhall is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Pena moves nicely into side control. Pena has hold of Woodhall's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Woodhall tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Pena cranks the arm and Woodhall screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Woodhall, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Pentti Pena! Pentti Pena retains his middleweight title!
