33 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, John Staal! The judges for this bout are William Gold, Sam Margolis and James Atkins.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Takahashi swings away with a leg kick that misses. Staal takes a head kick and keeps coming.
It looks like John Staal has been cut. Takahashi lands with an uppercut that bounces Staal off the cage and back into range. Staal throws a solid leg kick but Takahashi takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Staal. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! A head kick misses from Staal. Takahashi misses with a head kick.
Takahashi throws a leg kick but he was too far away and it doesn't land. Takahashi digs a good body shot into Staal's ribs. Takahashi fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Staal is out of range. Takahashi connects with an inside leg kick. A good leg kick by Takahashi. Staal looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Takahashi looks to land a combination but Staal avoids it well. Takahashi motions for Staal to come forward. Takahashi throws a leg kick but it misses it's target. Takahashi scores with the left hand. Staal knows he should have avoided that one. Takahashi throws a solid leg kick but Staal takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Takahashi. Staal lands a glancing blow to the side of Takahashi's head. Takahashi thumps Staal with a low kick.
That's one minute gone in the round. Takahashi throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Staal throws a body punch but Takahashi moves out of range. Takahashi thows a body shot but no joy. Staal misses with a body shot.
Staal moves out of range of the body kick. Staal throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
A nice inside leg kick there by Staal. That's going to slow Takahashi down. That kick from Takahashi tenderised Staal's leg. Staal is trying to keep his angry face on. Ethelbart Takahashi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Staal checks the leg kick. Takahashi misses with a head kick.
Staal has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Takahashi. Takahashi misses with a leg kick. Takahashi pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Staal will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Staal walks forward, straight into a front kick from Takahashi. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Takahashi takes a swing at Staal's ribcage but misses. Staal tries a low kick but Takahashi avoids it. Takahashi takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh. Takahashi uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Staal has time to react. Staal misses with a kick to the body.

Takahashi lands a big head kick that sends Staal tumbling to the mat! Takahashi takes a step backwards and waves Staal back to his feet - he wants the finish! Takahashi cracks the inside of Staal's front leg. A nice inside leg kick there by Takahashi. That's going to slow Staal down. Staal avoids a low kick by using good footwork. Takahashi scores with a crisp jab that stopped Staal in his tracks. Takahashi misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Staal.

Staal is rocked!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Staal checks the leg kick. Takahashi feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Staal sprawling to the canvas! Staal rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Takahashi finish him?!
Staal is still on wobbly legs! Can Takahashi finish him? Takahashi keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
This has been an exciting period of action! Staal thows a body shot but no joy. Takahashi with a body punch. A glancing blow. Takahashi is looking to wear down Staal with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment. Staal looks winded! Takahashi pushes Staal away with a front kick. Staal seems to have recovered his senses. Both fighters step back and shake their arms out. Takahashi engages and cracks Staal with a massive lead left hook - Staal tumbles to the floor, out cold! What a shot! Takahashi is delighted - all that hard work in training paid off!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:29 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Ethelbart Takahashi! Ethelbart Takahashi retains his heavyweight title! A relieved looking Ethelbart Takahashi thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
