PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kira Kato (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Deb The Machine (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kato comes to the cage accompanied by MAD WORLD by Gary Jules. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Deb The Machine was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kira Kato!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Deb The Machine!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, David Schapiro and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The Machine closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Kato quickly recovers to half guard.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
The Machine throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Kato really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kato moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
The Machine stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kato swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kato could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Kato controls The Machine momentarily but The Machine frees himself.
The Machine wants to pass the guard but Kato is keeping the position.
Kato bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in The Machine's guard.
We've been hearing good reports from Kato's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

The Machine looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Kato passes into side control.

The Machine bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Kato is trying to keep The Machine in close.
Kato is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Kato looking to control but The Machine passes into half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Kato moves into full guard.
Kato pulls The Machine in close to his closed guard and prevents The Machine from doing any damage or advancing position.

Kato had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. The Machine defends it easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kato looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Kato has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The Machine must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Kato is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Kato has his foot on The Machine's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. The Machine works his way back into a safe position though.
Kato has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but The Machine has passed into side control.
Kato is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kato is on top in guard.

The Machine is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Kato defends well.
Kato pushes down on The Machine's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The Machine is looking for a sweep. Kato is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action!



The Machine throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Kato tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. The Machine is in Kato's guard.
The Machine wants to pass the guard but Kato is keeping the position.
The Machine postures up in Kato's guard and throws a big left but Kato blocks it.
The Machine stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kato swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The Machine postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The Machine works a leg free and moves into half guard.

The Machine is looking for a kimura but Kato is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for The Machine to get the leverage.
The Machine is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Kato reverses the position - he's now on top in The Machine's guard.
Kato forces his way into half guard.
The Machine tries to roll over but Kato keeps him under control.

Kato seems to be looking for submissions.
Kato prevents The Machine from improving his position.

Kato is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Kato seems to be looking for submissions.

Kato is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and The Machine defends it well.
The Machine wants to improve his position but Kato is controlling well.

Kato is looking for a kimura but The Machine is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Kato to get the leverage.
The Machine regains full guard. Nicely done.
Kira Kato overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The Machine is breathing heavily.

Kato wants to work for an arm triangle but The Machine is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
This has been an exciting period of action!
The Machine tries to get to full guard but Kato has control of the leg.

Kato is trying for a kimura here. The Machine looks like he's in a lot of pain... and he's tapping out! Kato wins by kimura!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Kira Kato!
