Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
24 - 9 - 2, fighting out of Montreal, Diego Sanchez! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
14 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Kim Young Il! The judges for this bout are William Peck, Trevor Gratis and Alec Ball.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Il fails to land with a series of punches.
A nice leg kick lands there from Il. Il lands with a thumping leg kick.
Nice defenses there by Il. Il throws a hook to the side of Sanchez's head but Sanchez sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Sanchez throws a lazy uppercut
and Il counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Il working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Il wants to control from the top but Sanchez keeps moving. Il passes Sanchez's left leg - he's now in half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Il thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Il throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Il is looking to take a break and control but Sanchez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Il is looking to advance position but Sanchez won't allow it. Il thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Sanchez's head. Il throws a strike but Sanchez avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Il trying to control the position from guard on top but Sanchez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Sanchez really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Sanchez is pulling down on Il's head. It's preventing any offense from Il, at least for the moment. Il is looking to advance position but Sanchez has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount! Sanchez takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Il wants to control but Sanchez is having none of it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sanchez controlling from the full mount. Il tries to get back to half guard but can't.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Il tries to lock up and control but Sanchez gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Il tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Sanchez lands an overhand right. Il lands with a cross. Sanchez throws a lazy right hand but Il sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Kim Young Il dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Sanchez takes a swing at Il's ribcage but misses. Il turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick. Il on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Sanchez looks to land a body kick but Il moved away. Il connects with an inside leg kick. Sanchez thumps Il with a low kick. Sanchez misses with a body kick. A low kick from Il is predictable there and Sanchez counters with an outside leg kick.
Sanchez ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Il moves away. Sanchez lands a front kick. Il stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Sanchez. Il tried to score with a low kick but Sanchez checks it. Il looks to land a body kick but Sanchez moved away. Sanchez throws a jab when Il was well out of range.
That's one minute gone in the round. Il walks into a left hand. Sanchez connects with the punch. Sanchez throws the kick towards the body but Il avoids it. Sanchez misses with a straight right. Sanchez misses with a looping right. Sanchez lands with a cross. Good leg kick by Il there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Il moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. Sanchez throws a body kick that misses and Il counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Il missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Kim Young Il has got the better of the ground game so far. Il throws a strike but Sanchez rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Il looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Il is trying to control the position but Sanchez postures up. Sanchez preventing the sweep.
Kim Young Il has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Nice defenses there by Il. Il throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Sanchez counters with a stiff right hand.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sanchez misses with an uppercut. Il saw that one coming. Sanchez throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Il throws a body punch but Sanchez moves out of range. Il feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Sanchez's calf. Sanchez throws a jab when Il was well out of range. Diego Sanchez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Sanchez rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Il counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Sanchez's guard now. Il wants to control from the top but Sanchez keeps moving. Il throws a strike but Sanchez rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Sanchez won't allow Il to sweep him here.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Il keeps trying to improve his position. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Il looking to control but Sanchez passes into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close second round but Kim Young Il will probably get the nod - 10:9. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Il paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button. Sanchez is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot. Sanchez misses with a wild body shot. Sanchez lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Il checks a low kick from Sanchez. Il dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Il scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Il thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Sanchez's head. Il wants to pass the guard but Sanchez is defending well. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Sanchez wants to get back to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Il accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Sanchez utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Il throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Il looking to sit in guard and control but Sanchez gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Il pulls Sanchez in close to prevent any damage.

Diego Sanchez has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet. A lazy body kick from Il and Sanchez counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Il takes one to the side of the head.
Sanchez tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Il was well out of range. Poor timing from Sanchez. Sanchez is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range. Sanchez connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there. Sanchez moves out of range as Il strikes. Il wants to land a leg kick but Sanchez is out of range.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A good leg kick by Sanchez. Diego Sanchez is winning the standup battle so far. Sanchez ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Il moves away. Il feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Sanchez's calf. Sanchez digs a good body shot into Il's ribs. Il closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so. Il bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Sanchez lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent. Il misses with a wild body shot. Sanchez throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Sanchez lands with a slapping head kick. Il on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Il drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close third round but Kim Young Il just about did enough to take it. That's time! Sanchez's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Il thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Sanchez if he has to take too many more of those.
Il changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Sanchez tries to avoid it but Il manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Sanchez to the ground. Sanchez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Il misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Sanchez counters with a nice kick to the body. Il throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Sanchez throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Sanchez avoids the head kick by Il.
Il is looking to slow Sanchez down with leg kicks. Sanchez is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight. A swing and a miss from Sanchez. A looping hook to the body misses from Sanchez. Il does a little dance to reset his feet. Sanchez misses with a left hand and Il counters with a good, hard body kick but Sanchez shrugs it off. Sanchez throws a push kick but Il slaps the foot to one side. Sanchez wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
That's one minute gone in the round. Il takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt. That kick from Il tenderised Sanchez's leg. Sanchez is trying to keep his angry face on. Il misses with a kick to the body.
Il connects with an inside leg kick. Sanchez checks the leg kick. Il checks a low kick from Sanchez. A slapping leg kick lands for Il.

Il lands with a good body shot. Il looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Sanchez! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Il creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Sanchez sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. Sanchez dodges the ground and pound from Il. Il passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Sanchez! Il looking to control but Sanchez is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Sanchez regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Il. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Il throws an elbow that misses. Sanchez uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Il's guard. Nice move by Sanchez! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kim Young Il is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight. Il avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Il lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Sanchez throws an off balance right hand

And that's the end of the fight! Kim Young Il comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. I've got Il winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
