Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
13 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dean Lister! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
14 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Steve Cantwell! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Wesley Smith and Daniel Franklin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! No joy there for Cantwell, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Lister lands a leg kick that knocks Cantwell off balance momentarily. Lister throws a right and a left that both miss. Cantwell misses with a series of wild punches.
Cantwell swinging wildly here.
A punch combination from Cantwell misses. Lister looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Cantwell is fending him off so far but Lister persists. Nope, Cantwell circles away and we're back to standing. Lister shoots in for a double leg but Cantwell sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Cantwell misses the shot to the body. Cantwell misses with a two punch combination.
Lister swinging wildly here.
Cantwell throws a sloppy head kick and Lister moves out of range easily. Lister shoots in but no luck this time. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dean Lister. That's going to take a lot out of him. Lister fails with a takedown attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Lister. Cantwell throws a nice looking combination but Lister bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Lister looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Cantwell uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
It looks like Dean Lister has been cut. Cantwell misses with an uppercut. Lister saw that one coming. Lister throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Cantwell tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Lister is in Cantwell's guard. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Lister wanted to stand there but Cantwell had control of the position. Lister is breathing heavily. Cantwell wants to get back to his feet but Lister is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cantwell avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Lister has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Cantwell is proving hard to escape from. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Cantwell has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Lister off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds. Lister fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Cantwell throws a nice inside leg kick. Cantwell misses with a few strikes there.
Lister throws a head kick that half lands.
Lister shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Cantwell as he avoids it easily. Lister tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Cantwell defends well and Lister ends up having to push Cantwell into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Cantwell escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cantwell misses with a body kick. Lister with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Cantwell to score with a decent uppercut. Lister has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Cantwell finds it's way round the side to connect with Lister's head. Cantwell catches Lister with a right, a left, a right. It's raining punches and Lister forgot an umbrella! Another punch and he's down. This one is over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:22 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Steve Cantwell! Our winner, Steve Cantwell, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
