PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Steve Stevenson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Toshi Matoshin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Matoshin has chosen Mortal Kombat theme as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the ring.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Steve Stevenson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Toshi Matoshin!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Paul Gruel and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stevenson fails with the takedown.
Matoshin scores with a jab to the head.
Matoshin displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Stevenson.
Stevenson circles away from the clinch attempt.
Matoshin thuds a left hand into Stevenson's body.
Nice defenses there by Stevenson.
Matoshin smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.


It looks like Steve Stevenson has been cut.
Matoshin scores with a nice strike.
Matoshin looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Matoshin lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Stevenson shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Matoshin enables Stevenson to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Matoshin manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Stevenson avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
We've been hearing good reports from Stevenson's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Stevenson postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Matoshin tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Stevenson wants to pass the guard but Matoshin is keeping the position.

Matoshin working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Stevenson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Stevenson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Matoshin wants to stand and escape but Stevenson is having none of it.
Stevenson wants to control from the top but Matoshin keeps moving.
Stevenson passes into half guard.
Stevenson is trying to control the action in half guard but Matoshin is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Matoshin kicks off Stevenson and gets to his feet.
Matoshin has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Stevenson is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Matoshin staying out of range there.
A big left from Matoshin misses.
Stevenson shoots in for a takedown but Matoshin shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Steve Stevenson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Matoshin misses the jab.
Matoshin dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Stevenson chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Matoshin can pounce on him.

Matoshin fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Stevenson walks into a jab.
Stevenson tries for a takedown but Matoshin circles away easily
and Matoshin counters with a stiff right hand.
Stevenson drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Stevenson has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Stevenson there as he acknowledges the shot.

and Matoshin counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Matoshin pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Matoshin scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Stevenson throws a right and a left that both miss.
Stevenson looks to score with a jab to the body but Matoshin is just out of range.
Matoshin slips a jab and a cross from Stevenson.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Matoshin cracks Stevenson with a good jab.


Stevenson is rocked!
Toshi Matoshin is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Stevenson blocks a jab.
Matoshin throws a hook to the side of Stevenson's head but Stevenson sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Matoshin connects with the punch.
Oh Stevenson is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Stevenson is wiping some vaseline out of his eye. Matoshin doesn't give a rats ass about fair play and cracks him with a massive hook to the side of the head! Stevenson crumples to the floor out cold! The cornerman is going to be in Stevenson's bad books for that mishap!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:26 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Toshi Matoshin!
Toshi Matoshin seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
