Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Michael Alvarez! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bruce Sanders! The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Seu Braga and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Alvarez drives through with a takedown into guard. Sanders is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Sanders is trying to work for a kimura but Alvarez is defending well.
Alvarez looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Sanders moves nicely into side control. Sanders tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sanders is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Alvarez is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Alvarez tries to improve position but can't. Sanders advances to mount. Alvarez tries to reverse the position but Sanders maintains control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sanders looking to secure an arm triangle but Alvarez defends it well. Sanders is working for a guillotine from mount but Alvarez frees his head quite easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sanders looks gassed! Sanders looking to secure an arm triangle but Alvarez defends it well. Sanders looking to pass the guard. Sanders thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Sanders trying to control the position from guard on top but Alvarez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Sanders pushes down on Alvarez's leg and manages to get into half guard. Alvarez looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Sanders is looking to take a break and control but Alvarez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sanders tries to pass the half guard into mount. Alvarez knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Sanders is taking a breather. Alvarez says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Alvarez slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Sanders wants to pass the guard but Alvarez is keeping the position. Alvarez has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sanders can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Sanders passes easily into side control. Nice work. Alvarez is looking to reverse the position. Sanders tries for a kimura but Alvarez is defending well.

Possibly, maybe, no Sanders has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Alvarez is looking to reverse the position. Sanders advances nicely into full mount. Sanders looking to control but Alvarez is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Sanders is working for a guillotine from mount but Alvarez frees his head quite easily.
Alvarez is squirming around, avoiding Sanders's attempts to control the action. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Bruce Sanders dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Nice takedown defense from Sanders. No joy for Alvarez on that attempt. Sanders throws a right hand that Alvarez ducks under and follows up with a left that Alvarez also avoids with ease. Horrible takedown by Alvarez or perhaps it was just good defense by Sanders which made him look bad. Alvarez looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Michael Alvarez. That's going to take a lot out of him. Sanders feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Sanders sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Alvarez's guard. Sanders moves nicely into side control. Sanders advances nicely into full mount. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Alvarez tries to get back to half guard but can't. Sanders has hold of Alvarez's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Alvarez manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Sanders looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Alvarez has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
Alvarez tries to escape but Sanders has the hooks in and won't let him break free. Sanders is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Alvarez has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
