Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Stephan Kirhhoff! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Antonio Cruz! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Felipe Paraventi and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cruz stuffs the takedown. Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world. Nice straight punches there by Cruz. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Cruz. Kirhhoff tries to score a power double leg takedown but Cruz sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kirhhoff somewhat. Nice sprawl there from Cruz as Kirhhoff shoots in. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Stephan Kirhhoff. That's going to take a lot out of him. Cruz throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
It looks like Stephan Kirhhoff has been cut. Kirhhoff tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Cruz defends well and Kirhhoff ends up having to push Cruz into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz is trying to break the clinch but Kirhhoff has him pressed against the cage. Both guys are working to get underhooks. Cruz is looking to break free of the clinch but Kirhhoff has double underhooks. Cruz looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. Kirhhoff taking a break, stalling in the clinch.
Cruz wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Cruz tries to circle away but Kirhhoff has him pinned against the cage. Cruz is trying to break free.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cruz jumps guard and drags Kirhhoff to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Cruz not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Kirhhoff trying to control the position from guard on top but Cruz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. A left and a right from Cruz both land. Nice combination. Cruz defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Kirhhoff. No luck with that takedown attempt from Kirhhoff.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A head kick by Cruz misses and Kirhhoff counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Cruz wants to control the position but Kirhhoff says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kirhhoff throwing shots but Cruz is blocking nicely. Cruz wants to stand back up but Kirhhoff manages to pass into side control.
Cruz is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Kirhhoff is controlling him well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Cruz tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck. Kirhhoff takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Cruz holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Kirhhoff tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Cruz is bucking up trying to escape but Kirhhoff cracks him with another couple of good strikes. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Antonio Cruz will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Stephan Kirhhoff's cut. That's time! Back to the action!
A kick lands to the mid section there for Cruz. Kirhhoff shoots in but no luck this time. Cruz throws a sloppy head kick and Kirhhoff moves out of range easily. Kirhhoff dives in for a single leg takedown but Cruz sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Cruz tries to circle away but Kirhhoff has him pinned against the cage. Cruz is trying to push Kirhhoff away but Kirhhoff has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Kirhhoff has Cruz pressed against the cage, preventing Cruz from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kirhhoff effectively controlling the action here. Cruz wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Kirhhoff stalling in the clinch but Cruz improves position. Kirhhoff has Cruz pushed against the cage. Cruz has had enough of the clinch but Kirhhoff keeps him there for the moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cruz is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Cruz is looking to break free of the clinch but Kirhhoff has double underhooks. Kirhhoff looking to slow down the pace here. Cruz breaks the clinch.
Cruz looks to land a combination. Kirhhoff sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kirhhoff is trying hard to land a takedown here. Cruz sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Stephan Kirhhoff. That's going to take a lot out of him. Kirhhoff fails with the takedown and Cruz counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Kirhhoff is lucky that one didn't land flush. Kirhhoff fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Cruz cracks Kirhhoff with a good jab. Kirhhoff takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kirhhoff shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Cruz as he avoids it easily. Antonio Cruz seems to be getting the better of the standup. Cruz listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Kirhhoff dodges the punch combination from Cruz.
Kirhhoff fails with a takedown attempt. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Cruz misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Antonio Cruz showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The cut man is working on Stephan Kirhhoff's cut. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!
A nice combination there by Cruz.
Kirhhoff tries for a takedown but Cruz sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Antonio Cruz is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Cruz closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Kirhhoff is rocked! Cruz tries to stand but Kirhhoff is controlling his head. You can see the frustration on Kirhhoff's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Kirhhoff tries to bench press Cruz off him but Cruz keeps the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cruz wants to stand but Kirhhoff has him controlled and pulls him back into his guard. Kirhhoff is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Stephan Kirhhoff wasn't doing enough on the ground. Cruz goes for a high kick. It partially lands. Oh Kirhhoff is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cruz throws a nasty head kick that just misses. He throws another kick to the head of his opponent and almost takes it off! Kirhhoff crumples to the floor and the fight is over!
