PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between James Howlett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ratt Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Howlett comes to the cage accompanied by Berserker. Hughes has chosen Country boy can survive as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Howlett!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 38 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ratt Hughes!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Russell Pearce and Eddie Farnsworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Howlett with a nice cross.
Howlett looks for the body kick but Hughes saw that one coming.
Howlett walks into a left hand.
Howlett definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Hughes darts in looking for a takedown but Howlett gets double underhooks and turns Hughes into the cage.
Hughes wants to take the fight to the mat but Howlett manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Howlett lands a body shot in the clinch.
A shot in the inside from Howlett.
Howlett throws a punch but it's blocked by Hughes.

Hughes decides to pull guard.

Howlett drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Howlett jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Howlett throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Hughes works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Hughes controls Howlett momentarily but Howlett frees himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hughes looking to hit a scissor sweep but Howlett is one step ahead there.
Howlett stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hughes swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Hughes looking for a sweep. Not yet Hughes, not yet.
Howlett passes Hughes's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Howlett passes into side control, despite Hughes's attempt to control the position.
Hughes sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Hughes is controlling Howlett's trapped leg to prevent Howlett from advancing to side control.
Hughes is looking for a sweep. Howlett is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Howlett not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Howlett has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Hughes is trying to get back to full guard.

Howlett is looking to advance position but Hughes won't allow it.
Hughes wants to control the action here but instead Howlett manages to pass to full mount!
Hughes is looking to get to half guard.
Hughes is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
A nice elbow there by Howlett.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Howlett putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
Hughes is looking to improve his position but Howlett isn't that keen on the idea.
Howlett landing strikes from the mount.
Howlett avoids the attempt from Hughes to control.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Howlett prevents Hughes from getting the reversal.

Hughes is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Howlett controlling from mount.
Hughes is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Hughes takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Hughes is trying to escape the mount.
Howlett lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Hughes can't escape the position.
Howlett raining down shots from the mount!
Hughes tries to hold on but Howlett postures up.

Hughes in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Howlett landing strikes, looking to finish!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Howlett lands a big elbow.
Hughes is trying to escape the mount.
Howlett cracks Hughes with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Hughes tries to hold on but Howlett pushes him away.
Hughes slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Howlett is thwarting Hughes's attempts to control the position.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Hughes wants to improve his position but Howlett is controlling well.
Hughes regains full guard. Nicely done.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Howlett dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Howlett cracks Hughes with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Howlett walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Howlett takes one to the side of the head.
Howlett scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Hughes changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Howlett looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Howlett tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Howlett is trying to work for a sweep but Hughes has mounted him!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hughes misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Howlett is trying desperately to improve position.
Poor strikes thrown by Hughes there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Hughes throws some wild stikes that Howlett manages to avoid easily.
Howlett can't escape the position.

Howlett regains half guard.
My spies in Manu's Kiwi Beer Barn - PIT Inc. inform me that Hughes has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Hughes looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Howlett avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Hughes.
Howlett keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Hughes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Howlett keeps working.

Howlett moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Hughes controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Howlett has Hughes pulled in close to control his posture.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Howlett is trying to control the position from the bottom.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Howlett moves out of range as Hughes strikes.
James Howlett seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hughes connects with a looping right hand.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Hughes throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Howlett's waist but Howlett gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Hughes off to one side.
Howlett scores with a nice strike.
Jab, jab by Hughes - just one landing.
Hughes connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

Howlett throws the left hand but Hughes avoids the punch easily.
Howlett misses with a straight left.
A punch combination from Hughes misses.
Good leg kick by Howlett there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Howlett scores with a body shot.
Hughes has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Hughes there as he acknowledges the shot.
Howlett is looking to slow Hughes down with leg kicks.
Howlett wants to clinch.
Howlett ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Hughes.

Howlett thuds a left hand into Hughes's body.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Howlett uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Hughes has time to react.
Hughes lunges at Howlett with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Howlett's hand.
Howlett keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
James Howlett has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ratt Hughes.
Hughes is breathing heavily.
Howlett slips under a jab.
Hughes takes one on the button.


Hughes is rocked!
James Howlett is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Hughes bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Howlett's head.
Howlett throws a lazy head kick

and Hughes counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Howlett is refusing to be controlled, as Hughes sits in half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that James Howlett will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Howlett lands a left and a right that send Hughes crashing to the mat, dazed. Howlett thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
Hughes is still on wobbly legs! Can Howlett finish him?

Hughes seems to have recovered his senses.
Hughes swings widly with a right hand
and Howlett counters with a nice leg kick.
Howlett misses with a wild body shot.
Howlett dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Hughes avoids a kick to the body.
Hughes goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Howlett tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Hughes was well out of range. Poor timing from Howlett.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Howlett.
No luck for Hughes with that takedown attempt.

A right-left combo lands from Howlett.
James Howlett is winning the standup battle so far.
Hughes walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Howlett checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Hughes throws an off balance right hand
and Howlett cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Howlett misses with a low kick.
Hughes misses with a looping left.
Howlett throws a front kick aimed at Hughes's knee but Hughes avoids it well.
Howlett throws a leg kick that misses.
Hughes throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Howlett's waist but Howlett gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Hughes off to one side.

Howlett thows a body shot but no joy.
Hughes tries to bum rush Howlett with a series of wild strikes but Howlett uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Howlett lands a nice shot that snaps Hughes's head back.

Hughes takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Hughes tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Hughes takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Howlett walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Hughes checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Hughes has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Howlett ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

Howlett feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Hughes sprawling to the canvas! Hughes rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Howlett finish him?!
Howlett explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Hughes takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Howlett misses the shot to the body.
Hughes gets hit by the mother of all head kicks and drops to the canvas in a crumpled heap! Woooow, the Internet is going to be talking about this one for weeks!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:45 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). James Howlett!
