The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shields shoots in for a takedown but Whyte shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Nice takedown defense from Whyte. No joy for Shields on that attempt.
Shields fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
David Whyte has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jake Shields.
Shields shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Shields misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Shields shoots in for a double leg but Whyte sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Whyte scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.

Shields shoots in looking for a takedown but Whyte manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Shields's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

It looks like Jake Shields has been cut.
Whyte lands with a nice combination. Shields backs away looking to recover.
Shields takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Whyte is looking for an opening here. He's unloaded a big left hand that catches Shields flush on the jaw and sends him tumbling to the canvas! Shields is out cold! Whyte holds back from landing any unnecessary shots to his unconscious opponent, as the referee reacts slowly to the situation. A brutal knockout and then some excellent sportsmanship - this guy is my new favorite fighter!
