Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
30 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Bj Penn! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Walter Rothko ! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Alan Glass and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rothko tries to clinch but Penn moves out of range. A lazy body kick from Rothko and Penn counters with a straight right hand. Penn throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd. Rothko shoots and misses and Penn counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Penn scores with a body shot.
Rothko takes one on the button. Rothko fails in his attempt to clinch. Rothko tries for a takedown but Penn circles away easily and Penn connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Penn scores with a shot to the body.
Penn lands a really nice looking cross but Rothko seems unphased.
Rothko moves to clinch but Penn breaks away and Penn counters with a right hand to the body. Penn fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. That's one minute gone in the round. Penn dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Rothko misses with a shot to the body and Penn counters with a right hand to the body. Penn throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd. Bj Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. The crowd cheers as Penn lands an impressive looking overhand right. Rothko doesn't seem phased though. Penn scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent. Rothko tries for a takedown but Penn circles away easily and Penn counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Bj Penn has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Walter Rothko . Rothko closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so. Rothko shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Penn counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt. Good standup being displayed there by Penn as he connects with a hook. This has been an exciting period of action! Rothko is looking to clinch but Penn is avoiding it.
Penn dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Rothko shoots and misses and Penn counters with a lovely shot to the body. Rothko looks winded! Penn thows a body kick. Rothko tries to catch it but that hurt him.

Penn is really peppering his opponent's head with punches. Rothko on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. Penn connects with a body shot that sends Rothko 's belly button to the back. Penn lands a jab to Rothko 's midsection. Rothko closes the distance but Penn moves to the side and Penn counters with a nice uppercut. Rothko fails with the takedown and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick. Rothko shoots and misses letting Penn counter with a right hand. Penn cracks a nice hook into Rothko 's ribs. Penn ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Rothko moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Penn scores with a sloppy right hand. Rothko should have avoided that one.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rothko takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Penn changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Rothko walks into a stiff left hand from Penn. Rothko shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Penn counters with a lovely straight right hand! Penn uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook. Penn lands a front kick. Penn scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Rothko doesn't seem bothered though. Penn lands a slapping body shot.
Penn lands a nice hook to Rothko 's body. Rothko takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. A lazy left from Penn finds it's target. Bj Penn is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Rothko tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Penn paws at him with a jab and circles away. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Penn fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Rothko has his takedown stuffed and Penn counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Penn thuds his shin into the meat of Rothko 's side. Penn works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance. Penn changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Rothko has a pretty nasty looking mouse under his right eye. Penn lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh. Penn cracks a nice hook into Rothko 's ribs. Rothko takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Penn fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Rothko looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Rothko has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Penn finds it's way round the side to connect with Rothko 's head. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Penn connects with a solid leg kick. A jab from Penn finds it's way through Rothko 's defenses. Rothko closes the distance looking to clinch enabling Penn to counter with a crisp jab. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Bj Penn dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Rothko takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Rothko misses with a takedown attempt and Penn counters with a straight punch to the midsection. Penn moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot. Both these guys seem content to just stand up and trade with eachother but Rothko might want to think about changing up his gameplan a bit because over the course of the fight, Penn has got the better of the exchanges. Rothko has his takedown stuffed and Penn counters with a leg kick. Penn wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection. Penn throws a shot to the body.
Penn connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Rothko momentarily.
Nice cross by Penn. Rothko tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Penn manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Walter Rothko is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. A decent looking cross lands there for Penn.
Rothko is rocked! Rothko throws the left hand but Penn avoids the punch easily. Penn keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.

Penn lands a jab to Rothko 's midsection. Penn's corner calls for a 1-2. Penn obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. A chopping leg kick lands by Penn. Rothko is trying desperately to land a takedown but Penn is having absolutely none of it. This is turning into a bit of a nightmare for Rothko . Penn darts in and out, connecting with a jab. Penn fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Rothko looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Penn fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Penn connects with a vicious head kick that knocks Rothko to the floor! Penn dives in looking for the finish! Penn is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Rothko can do to turn this around? This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Penn looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Rothko with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Penn content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Penn slips a nice elbow through Rothko 's hands, connecting with Rothko 's forehead.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Rothko wants to get back to full guard but Penn has passed into side control. Penn working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Rothko seems to have recovered his senses. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Penn content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rothko is trying to control Penn's posture but Penn avoids it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn cracks Rothko with an elbow. That is naaassty. Rothko is trying to buck Penn off. Penn working the body and head with strikes. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Penn has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Penn in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows. Rothko is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Penn prevents Rothko from improving his position. Rothko is breathing heavily.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Penn seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Rothko taking some punishment here, with Penn in his half guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Rothko is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Penn jumps into side control! Penn has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Rothko ! Penn working Rothko over with strikes here. Penn content just to control the position here. Penn scores with a couple of good head shots there.

Bj Penn dominated that second round. That's time! Back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!
Penn throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Rothko stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly. A slow jab from Rothko misses its intended target. Rothko with a lazy takedown attempt and Penn counters with an inside leg kick. Penn scores with a decent looking hook. Rothko gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Penn connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Penn drops Rothko with a straight right hand, right on the button! Penn follows him down to the mat and pounds him out with hammerfists until the referee jumps in to end the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:37 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Bj Penn! Bj Penn opened up his post fight interview with a scream to camera that he wants a title shot! Whether he deserves the shot will be up to the management of the organization, so I guess he'll have to wait and see.
