PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kirill Petrov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Antonio Vegata (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Petrov comes to the cage accompanied by Iron Man. On his way into the cage it seems that Kirill Petrov has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Kirill Petrov seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Antonio Vegata!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No luck for Vegata with that takedown attempt.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Vegata enables Petrov to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Vegata manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Petrov is pushing down on Vegata's leg trying to pass to half guard. Vegata is fighting to maintain full guard but Petrov has managed to sneak the leg through.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vegata has his hands clasped together around Petrov's back. He's all about the action.
We've been hearing good reports from Petrov's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Petrov looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Petrov displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Vegata.

Petrov uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Vegata.

Antonio Vegata seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Vegata throws out a loose jab but Petrov uses good head movement to avoid it.

Petrov drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Vegata gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Petrov fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Petrov has Vegata pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Vegata manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Petrov controls Vegata momentarily but Vegata frees himself.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Kirill Petrov wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Vegata slips under a jab.
Petrov shoots in for a takedown but Vegata shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Vegata ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.

Petrov is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Vegata's half guard.

Petrov is thwarting Vegata's attempts to control the position.
Vegata is doing well to control the position and prevent Petrov from advancing to side control.
Petrov is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Vegata reverses the position - he's now on top in Petrov's guard.

Vegata drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Petrov dives on top into guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

That was a close second round but I would say that Kirill Petrov will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Petrov takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Petrov misses with a right hand
and Vegata cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Petrov fails in his attempt to clinch.
Petrov throws a right and a left that Vegata avoids nicely.
Petrov fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Vegata on the side of the head.
Vegata misses with an uppercut
and Petrov counters with a stiff right hand.
Vegata misses with a straight right.
Petrov jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Vegata shoots in for a double leg but Petrov sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Petrov slaps away a takedown attempt from Vegata, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Vegata looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Petrov looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Petrov gets full guard.
Vegata trying to control but Petrov is working from the bottom.
Petrov wants to sweep here but Vegata controlling him for the moment.
Petrov manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Vegata manages to get himself to full guard.

Petrov sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Vegata's guard.

Petrov works his foot free and advances to mount.
Petrov looking to control but Vegata is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Petrov is working for a guillotine from mount but Vegata frees his head quite easily.
Vegata tries to hold on but Petrov pushes him away.
Petrov tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Petrov has control of Vegata's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Vegata regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Vegata regains half guard.
Petrov frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Petrov is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Vegata is surviving well by controlling Petrov's body position as best he can.
Kirill Petrov is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Vegata wants to control but Petrov is keeping busy.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Antonio Vegata hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Petrov shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Petrov was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Antonio Vegata has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Petrov is looking to take a break and control but Vegata is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Well Petrov has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
