Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Josh Berzins! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Achilles Akhilleus! The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Richard Clark and Steven Brown.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Akhilleus keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Akhilleus uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Berzins. Berzins throws a hook but Akhilleus avoids it easily. Akhilleus scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent. Akhilleus scores with a head kick. Berzins tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time. Berzins on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. Berzins fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Akhilleus to the ground. Berzins is now in Akhilleus's guard. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Akhilleus being controlled here, momentarily. Berzins has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. Berzins's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Berzins has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
We're going to have a standup here because Josh Berzins wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Akhilleus throws a head kick that misses. Akhilleus wants to clinch up but Berzins keeps it at a distance. Akhilleus slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range. A good leg kick by Akhilleus. Akhilleus throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Berzins misses with a hook. Akhilleus ducked under it nicely. Berzins avoids the head kick by Akhilleus.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Akhilleus throws a head kick that misses. Berzins drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Berzins has hold of Akhilleus's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Akhilleus tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Berzins cranks the arm and Akhilleus screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Akhilleus, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:37 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Josh Berzins! Our winner, Josh Berzins, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
