PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rory Abbott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones has chosen Never Say Never-Justine Bieber as his entrance music. On his way into the cage it seems that Rory Abbott has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Rory Abbott seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Rory Abbott!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones misses with a takedown

so Abbott counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Abbott controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Abbott is working Jones over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Jones is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Abbott throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Abbott pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Jones is keeping the position for now.
Jones is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Abbott slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Abbott seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Jones for as long as he can get away with.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Rory Abbott.
Abbott throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Abbott moves into range and clinches up with Jones.
Jones on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Abbott's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Abbott lands with a short shot to the head.
Abbott presses Jones against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.
Abbott looking to throw knees to the head but Jones is blocking nicely.

Jones fails to pull guard.

Abbott gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Abbott looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Abbott content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Abbott controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Abbott's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Rory Abbott just wasn't active enough.
Abbott pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Abbott bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Jones tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Abbott wants to control but Jones is keeping him busy.
Abbott is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Jones's shoulder. That is not cool.
Jones regains half guard.
Jones tries to get to full guard but Abbott has control of the leg.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Abbott is looking to take a break and control but Jones is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Jones has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Abbott is working away from the top position though.
Abbott tries to stand and escape but Jones actually recovers to full guard.
Abbott pushes down on Jones's leg and manages to get into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Abbott tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Jones.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rory Abbott dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Abbott tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Jones manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Jones tries to clinch but Abbott is having none of it.
Jones fails with the takedown

and Abbott counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Jones's guard now.
Jones has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Abbott wants to pass the guard but Jones is keeping the position.

Abbott won't allow Jones to get back to his feet.

Abbott trying to stand up but can't free himself from Jones's guard.
Abbott forces his way into half guard.
Jones is breathing heavily.

Abbott is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Jones has managed to free his arm - good work.
Abbott is thwarting Jones's attempts to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Abbott is controlling the pace.
Abbott tries to pass the half guard into mount. Jones knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Abbott seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Jones tries to roll over but Abbott keeps him under control.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

We're going to have a standup here because Rory Abbott wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Abbott manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Jones on his heels. He'll look to pass Jones's guard now, I'm sure.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Abbott accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Abbott might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Abbott not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Abbott has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Abbott wanted to stand there but Jones had control of the position.
Jones being controlled here, momentarily.

Jones looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Abbott slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Rory Abbott has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Abbott shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Abbott seems to be working for a kimura but Jones defends the submission attempt.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rory Abbott dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Abbott has closed the distance and engaged Jones in a clinch.

Abbott breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Jones gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Abbott counters with a thumping low kick.
Jones misses with a takedown attempt
and Abbott counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Jones darts in looking for a takedown but Abbott gets double underhooks and turns Jones into the cage.
Rory Abbott has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Jones.

Abbott turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Abbott manages to end up in side control.
Abbott moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Jones takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Abbott looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Abbott gets to mount! Jones was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.

Abbott has control of Jones's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Jones regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Abbott takes Jones's back, avoiding a couple of desperation strikes from the bottom.
Abbott is landing with strikes from the back.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Abbott lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Jones hold on?!
I would not like to be Jones right now.
Abbott punches Jones on the ear.
Abbott lands a punch to the side of the head from the back.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Oooh a big shot gets through from Abbott. Many more shots like that and the referee will have to think about stepping in!
Abbott controlling the position well here. Jones rolled but Abbott kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

Jon Jones has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rory Abbott is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Abbott has got one arm under Jones's chin. This could be trouble... Jones trying to control the other hand but Abbott gets it free and sqeezes tight - just a matter of time now! Yep, Jones has tapped out! The fight is over!
