Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Richie Davies! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paul Alexander! The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Alan Glass and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Davies misses with a few strikes there.
Davies throws a right hand that Alexander ducks under and follows up with a left that Alexander also avoids with ease. Alexander closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Alexander lands in his opponent's guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Alexander working some strikes from top position. Alexander stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Davies swivels though and keeps the full guard. Alexander's corner is telling him to maintain position. Davies knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Alexander on the ground. Davies working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Alexander. Alexander is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Davies is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Alexander is controlling him. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Alexander landing some decent shots from guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alexander seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Alexander thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Alexander looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Alexander won't allow Davies to get back to his feet. Davies really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. That's two minutes gone in the round. It looks like Alexander might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Paul Alexander has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Davies rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Alexander moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Alexander is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Davies's half guard. Alexander controlling the action here.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Alexander is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Davies defends it well. Alexander missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Davies is breathing heavily. Alexander drops an elbow to the side of Davies's head. Davies has hold of Alexander's hands but Alexander slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. That's four minutes gone in the round. Davies tries to kick Alexander off but Alexander keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Alexander winds up and cracks Davies with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Alexander drops an elbow to the side of Davies's head. Alexander has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Davies defend it? Alexander steps over the head and cranks it - Davies is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Alexander!
