Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Toddy Ruch! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Andrey Lapis! The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Vladimir Khabensky and Viktor Lagutenko.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lapis moves into the clinch. Lapis gets underhooks to prevent Ruch's takedown attempt.
Lapis breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Ruch misses with a low kick.
Lapis fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Ruch, pushing him back against the cage. Lapis manages to break the clinch.
Lapis closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Lapis pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Lapis misses with a hook. Ruch ducked under it nicely. Lapis defending well as Ruch loads up on a big left hand. Lapis throws a series of punches but Ruch avoids them all with ease. Lapis throws a nice looking combination but Ruch bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Lapis shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Ruch is trying to defend but Lapis finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Lapis wants to work for an arm triangle but Ruch is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Lapis prevents Ruch from improving his position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ruch is defending against the submission attempts here by Lapis.
