PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Asmann Djay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jan Standell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jan Standell will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Asmann Djay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jan Standell!
The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Nard Betker and Aafke Stam.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Standell drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Djay is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Standell defends well.
Standell wants to stand but Djay has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Standell tries to free his leg and advance position but Djay is retaining full guard.
Djay manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Djay thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.

Standell can't escape the position.
Djay could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Djay trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Standell regains half guard.
Djay is keen to just control but Standell is a slippery customer.
Djay looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Djay content to control rather than advance.
Standell is trying to control but can't.

Standell wants to improve his position but Djay is controlling well.
Standell pushes Djay off looking to stand but Djay dives back in and keeps control.
Djay wants to free his trapped foot but Standell is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Djay is looking for a kimura here.
Standell gets full guard.

Djay trying to stand up but can't free himself from Standell's guard.

Standell has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Djay can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Standell wants to get back to his feet but Djay is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Djay tries to stand but Standell is controlling from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Standell looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Djay controlling from the top position.

Standell working for a triangle but Djay defends it easily.
Djay is standing up over Standell. Standell looks to escape but Djay dives into side control.
Standell can't do much from the bottom here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Standell moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Standell darts in looking for a takedown but Djay gets double underhooks and turns Standell into the cage.
Standell lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Djay is trying to drag Standell to the mat but Standell just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Standell jumps guard and drags Djay to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Djay won't allow Standell to sweep him here.

Djay wants to stand but Standell has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Djay stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Standell swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Standell not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Asmann Djay.
Standell shoots in for a double leg but Djay sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Djay gets tackled into the cage by Standell. Standell maintains the clinch.
Djay tries for a takedown. No joy.
Standell tries a knee to the head but Djay blocks it.
Djay working hard to break the clinch.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Djay is trying to pull guard but Standell has him pressed against the cage.

Standell pulls guard.
Standell has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Djay throws an elbow that misses. Standell uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Djay's guard. Nice move by Standell!

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Standell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Djay swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Asmann Djay.

Standell closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Djay did well to prevent Standell getting side control.

Standell is working for a kimura but Djay is defending it quite comfortably.

Djay is looking to escape.
Djay trying to control but Standell postures up.
Standell stops Djay from getting back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Djay is staying active underneath Standell, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jan Standell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Standell dives in for a single leg takedown but Djay sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Djay fails to pull guard.
Djay wants a takedown.
Djay tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Asmann Djay. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Standell turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Djay is looking for a sweep.

Standell is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Djay is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Djay is trying to control Standell's posture but Standell avoids it.

Standell tries for a kimura but Djay is defending well.

Standell is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Djay has escaped the position, nice work there.
Djay is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Standell swings around for an armbar but Djay sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Standell's guard.

Djay in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Djay drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Standell manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Djay has Standell in his guard.

Djay has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Standell has passed into side control.

You can see the frustration on Djay's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Djay wants to control but Standell postures up.
Jan Standell is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Standell goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Djay has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Standell but great work by Djay.
Asmann Djay has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The strikes coming from Djay are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Jan Standell comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Standell has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
