Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Takeru Takeya! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Roger Baumgartner! The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, Steven Brown and Donald Grub.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Baumgartner shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Takeya as he jumps to the side. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Takeya shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Baumgartner's guard. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Baumgartner is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Baumgartner wants to hit a switch here but Takeya passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Baumgartner there! Takeya avoids the attempt from Baumgartner to control. Baumgartner sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Takeya has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. Baumgartner trying to control from the bottom.
Baumgartner controlling the position for now. Baumgartner actively working from the bottom here. Baumgartner is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Takeya's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Takeya's back!
That's one minute gone in the round. Baumgartner is looking for the choke from the back position but Takeya is controlling his hands well. Baumgartner is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Takeya defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined. Baumgartner has the hooks in. Takeya is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Takeya is working hard here to advance position. Our spies down at at Nexus Fight Factory inform us that Baumgartner has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off? Baumgartner trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Takeya doesn't escape. Takeya tries to escape the position.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Baumgartner looking for the choke but no joy. Baumgartner biding his time, looking for the opening.
That's two minutes gone in the round. It looks like Baumgartner might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Takeya staying busy and making it hard for Baumgartner to control. Baumgartner has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Takeya has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
Baumgartner lands punches and elbows. Baumgartner tightening his grip on Takeya, looking for the choke. Baumgartner working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Takeya is in bad spot here.
Baumgartner is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Takeya is defending well though. Baumgartner let's go of the attempt for now. Takeya turns into Baumgartner and is now in his guard.
Takeya trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Takeya throwing strikes but missing. Baumgartner is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Takeya moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Takeya looking for a sweep. Not yet Takeya, not yet. Baumgartner trying to control the position from guard on top but Takeya is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Takeya keeping full guard, as Baumgartner tries to pass. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Baumgartner sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Takeya's guard. Baumgartner seems to be looking for submissions.
Takeya wants to get back to full guard. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Baumgartner is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Takeya sees it coming and defends easily. Baumgartner seems to be looking for submissions.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Roger Baumgartner dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Takeya changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Baumgartner looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Baumgartner can't do much from the bottom here. Baumgartner is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Baumgartner manages to work his way to half guard, despite Takeya's best efforts. Baumgartner avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Takeya. Baumgartner trying to hold on to Takeya's head to control him but Takeya postures up.
Baumgartner is pressing down on Takeya's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Takeya with a flurry of punches that miss. Baumgartner looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Baumgartner avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Baumgartner seems keen to control Takeya's posture.
That's one minute gone in the round. Baumgartner is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Takeya defends well. Takeya throws an elbow that misses. Baumgartner uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Takeya's guard. Nice move by Baumgartner! Baumgartner is pushing down on Takeya's leg trying to pass to half guard. Takeya is fighting to maintain full guard but Baumgartner has managed to sneak the leg through. Takeya is trying to get back to full guard. Baumgartner has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Takeya is controlling an arm, preventing Baumgartner from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
Baumgartner swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Takeya is now in Baumgartner's guard. A big mistake from Baumgartner there, giving up the dominant position!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Baumgartner trying to keep a closed guard but Takeya is proving a slippery customer.
Baumgartner is pulling down on Takeya's head. It's preventing any offense from Takeya, at least for the moment. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Baumgartner is on top in guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Takeya looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Baumgartner trying to control but Takeya is working from the bottom. Baumgartner might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Takeya haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Takeya thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Baumgartner won't allow Takeya to sweep him here. Takeya manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Baumgartner is trying to escape the mount.
Baumgartner is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Takeya throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Baumgartner gets full guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Takeya is posturing up here but Baumgartner has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Takeya tries to roll out but it's too tight and Takeya has to tap! Slick submission there by Baumgartner!
