Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Monte Bernard! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Kobus Venter! The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Paul Aken and Nard Betker.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bernard tries to sprawl but Venter drives through with a takedown into half guard. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Bernard tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Venter has advanced to mount. Uh oh. Bernard sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though. Venter is thwarting Bernard's attempts to control the position. Venter tries to stand but his arm is trapped. Venter seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Bernard does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Bernard is trying to get back to full guard. Bernard trying to control but Venter postures up.
Bernard really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Venter controlling the action here.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Venter closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
That's one minute gone in the round. Venter is working Bernard over with some ground and pound from side control. Bernard tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Venter wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Bernard is trying to control Venter's posture but Venter avoids it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Venter is putting a hurting on Bernard here, landing some big shots from side control. Bernard is working to avoid the ground and pound but Venter connects with a decent elbow. Venter working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Venter misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Venter controls the position from side control. Venter working the ground and pound.
Bernard is rocked! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Venter lands an elbow. Oh Bernard is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Venter stands up and we're back to a striking position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fight moves into the clinch position. Venter manages to break the clinch.
Venter is looking for a takedown. Wow, that's a brutal slam - Bernard is in big trouble! Venter is landing strikes from the mount and this one is all over! The ref jumps in to save a confused looking Bernard. Poor guy.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:13 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Slam). Kobus Venter!
