PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kia Turunen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Monument Obelix (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Turunen kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Requiem for a Dream. Obelix has chosen i'm stupid as his entrance music. Kia Turunen could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to Monument Obelix's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kia Turunen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Monument Obelix!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Anni Minnemäki and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Turunen shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Obelix's guard.
Turunen wants to control from the top but Obelix keeps moving.
Obelix striking off his back but it's not causing Turunen any problems.
Turunen stands and throws Obelix's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Turunen in side control, throwing shots but Obelix defends.

Obelix is not content to let Turunen control the position.
Obelix defending against the ground and pound.

Turunen is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Obelix has escaped the position, nice work there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Obelix gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Turunen thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Turunen misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Turunen is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Obelix has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Turunen moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Obelix has worked his arm free - good work by Obelix!
Turunen is breathing heavily.

Turunen looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Obelix tries to buck Turunen off but Turunen is having none of it.
Obelix struggling a bit here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Turunen is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Obelix is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Turunen misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Turunen creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Obelix manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Obelix tries to pass to full mount but Turunen defends it.
Turunen slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Turunen wants to get back to his feet but Obelix is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Obelix passes Turunen's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Obelix seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Turunen tries to get to full guard but Obelix has control of the leg.
Turunen is controlling Obelix's position as best he can from this difficult position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kia Turunen dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Obelix misses with a takedown attempt - Turunen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Obelix is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Turunen pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Kia Turunen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Monument Obelix.

Kia Turunen has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Turunen tries to score a power double leg takedown but Obelix sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Turunen somewhat.

Turunen shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Obelix's guard.

Obelix has his foot on Turunen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Turunen works his way back into a safe position though.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Turunen shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Obelix manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Obelix has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Turunen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Turunen is looking to work some ground and pound but Obelix has wrist control.

Obelix is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Turunen accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Turunen drops back looking for a leg! Obelix is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Obelix manages to kick Turunen off! Turunen jumps back into Obelix's guard.

Turunen is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Obelix pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Turunen wants to control from the top but Obelix keeps moving.
Kia Turunen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Obelix wants to sweep but no luck.
Obelix keeps trying to improve his position.
Obelix has a closed guard, preventing Turunen from standing up.

Obelix wants to stand but Turunen has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Obelix darts in looking for a takedown but Turunen gets double underhooks and turns Obelix into the cage.
Turunen wants a takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kia Turunen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Turunen has Obelix pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Obelix manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Obelix's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Obelix misses with a head kick.
Turunen stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Turunen wants it to stay on the feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Obelix leaves Turunen with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Monument Obelix has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kia Turunen is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

I would just about give that final round to Monument Obelix.
