Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Nuno Martins! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 1, fighting out of New York, Kevin Love! The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Daniel Franklin and Wesley Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Love. Martins takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
We've been told by Martins's head coaches at Sawadee Muay Thai & MMA that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Martins needs to keep his hands up - Love had a free shot at his head there. Love misses with a kick to the body and Martins counters with a lovely shot to the body. Love has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Love feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Martins's calf. Martins tries a head kick but it misses.
Love blocks the body kick.
Love shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Martins as he jumps to the side. Kevin Love seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Love is defended easily by Martins. Nuno Martins has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kevin Love. Martins moves out of range as Love strikes. Nice defenses there by Martins. Love shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Love was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Love is looking to take a break and control but Martins is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Love misses with an attempted head punch from side control. Martins is trying to improve his position. Love throwing shots but missing, from side control. Love staying calm. Love is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Martins has escaped the position, nice work there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Love is trying to get an arm triangle but Martins is defending well. An elbow from Love crashes against the mat.
Love has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Love tries to score with some ground and pound. Martins controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage. Love throws an elbow but Martins slips to the side and avoids it well. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Love wants to control but Martins is keeping him busy. Martins is trying to get back to half guard. Love in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Martins is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
