Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Karl Bates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Said (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jon Said has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Karl Bates's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Karl Bates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jon Said!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Alexandre Firmino and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Said misses with a takedown

and Bates counters by moving into the clinch.
Said wants a takedown.
Bates is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Karl Bates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Said.
Said gets underhooks to prevent Bates's takedown attempt.

Bates tightens his grip and picks Said up, before dumping him to the ground. Said manages to land in guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Said is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Bates postures up.
Bates pushes down on Said's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Bates content to control rather than advance.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Said trying to hold on to Bates's head to control him but Bates postures up.
Bates seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Said trying to control here.
Said might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Bates haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Bates tries to pass to full mount but Said defends it.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jon Said.

Bates shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Said on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

Bates decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Said fails with a takedown attempt.

Bates closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Bates tightens his grip and picks Said up, before dumping him to the ground. Said manages to land in guard.
Bates could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Said is trying to keep Bates in close.

Said looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Bates passes into half guard.
Bates keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Said works his way to full guard. Good work.

Said escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Bates gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Said looking for a sweep. Not yet Said, not yet.
Bates working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.

Said looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Bates is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bates is looking to stand up but Said won't let him.

Said working for a triangle but Bates defends it easily.
Bates lands a couple of digs.
Bates preventing the sweep.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Bates stays in close to Said's body and controls the position.
Said wants to get back to his feet but Bates is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Bates's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Said tries for a takedown but Bates circles away easily

and Bates counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Bates looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Bates seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Said for as long as he can get away with.
Said looking to control.
Bates stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Said swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Said wants to control but Bates passes easily into half guard.
Bates prevents Said from improving his position.

Bates slips a nice elbow through Said's hands, connecting with Said's forehead.
Bates not doing much here.
Bates working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Bates is thwarting Said's attempts to control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Said is trying to control but Bates manages to pass to mount!

Said defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Bates.

Said is looking to get to half guard.
Bates landing strikes, looking to finish!
Bates tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Bates prevents Said from getting the reversal.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Said swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.

Bates looking to secure an arm triangle but Said defends it well.
Said is in all sorts of trouble here.
Bates takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Bates goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Said turns into him and now he's in Bates's guard.
Said trying to control the position from guard on top but Bates is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Bates is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Said defends well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Said postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Bates is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Said, into his guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bates is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Said is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Bates is trying to stand.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Said wants to stand up but Bates is controlling the position.
Said trying to mount his opponent but Bates defends it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Karl Bates dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!



Bates gets a clinch.
Said goes for a takedown in the clinch but Bates prevents it.
Bates tries to pull guard but Said holds him up against the cage and eventually Bates drops back down to his feet.
Bates jumps guard but Said stands there with Bates around his waist. Bates gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Said can't get the takedown.
Said has Bates pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Bates manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Karl Bates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jon Said.

Bates is looking to take this one to the mat.
Bates tries for a takedown. No joy.
Bates is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Said gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Bates turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Bates manages to end up in side control.
Said is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

Bates decides to stand back up. Bates steps back and let's Said get back to his feet.
Said fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Said shoots in but no luck this time.

Bates shoots in and bounces Said off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Said being controlled here, momentarily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Said looking to control but Bates passes into half guard.
Bates looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Said with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Said regains full guard. Nicely done.

Said throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Bates wants to stand but Said has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Said wants to stand and escape but Bates is having none of it.
Said trying to control the position.
Bates showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Jon Said has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Said looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Said keeping full guard, as Bates tries to pass.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bates slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Karl Bates wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Said shoots for a takedown but Bates saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Said fails with the takedown

and Bates counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Said!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Bates decides to stand back up. Bates steps back and let's Said get back to his feet.

Bates engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Said has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Bates is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Said.

And that's the end of the fight!
Karl Bates showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Bates, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
