PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tremaine Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anthony Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pettis comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Alab ng Puso-Abra kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tremaine Thomas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Anthony Pettis!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Chris Saunders and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pettis has closed the distance and engaged Thomas in a clinch.
Thomas could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Thomas breaks the clinch.
Pettis fails with an attempt to clinch.
Thomas's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Thomas duly obliges.
Pettis is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Thomas wants to clinch.
Thomas defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Pettis.
Pettis takes one to the side of the head.
Pettis pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Thomas closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Thomas jumps guard.
Thomas keeping full guard, as Pettis tries to pass.
Pettis in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Pettis lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pettis won't allow Thomas to sweep him here.
Pettis content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Pettis looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Pettis advances to half guard.
Pettis takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Still in half guard, Pettis seems content to control.

Pettis stands up out of the half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pettis is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Thomas.
A head kick misses from Pettis.

Pettis scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Pettis is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Thomas will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Pettis working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

Pettis tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Pettis slows the pace down.
Thomas is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Thomas is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pettis content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Pettis decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Pettis tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Thomas manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pettis tries a head kick but it misses.
Pettis tries to close the distance and clinch but Thomas swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Pettis slaps away a takedown attempt from Thomas, before circling back to the center of the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Anthony Pettis dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Pettis shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Pettis was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Pettis has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pettis cracks Thomas with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Anthony Pettis has got the better of the ground game so far.
Pettis is staying tight to Thomas's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Pettis has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Thomas!
Pettis looking to control and managing it successfully.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Thomas knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Pettis on the ground.
Thomas might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Thomas reaches up to try and control the position but Pettis seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Thomas rolls and tries to escape and now Pettis has his back!

Pettis has both hooks in and is working for a choke. Thomas is in real trouble here. Pettis gets an arm under the chin and tightens the submission attempt... is this the end? Yes, Thomas is tapping out! Pettis wins by rear naked choke!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Anthony Pettis!
An out of breath Anthony Pettis thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
