PBP Commentary

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, James Polish!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Thiago Cunha and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Polish looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Wilcox is fending him off so far but Polish persists. Nope, Wilcox circles away and we're back to standing.
Wilcox lands a body shot.
Wilcox tries to clinch

and Polish counters by clinching up.

Wilcox's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Polish keeps the fight on the outside.
Polish misses with a takedown attempt

and Wilcox holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Polish managing to block the knees to the body from Wilcox.
Polish avoiding damage as Wilcox throws knees to the body.
Wilcox is pushing Polish up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Wilcox lands an elbow inside.

Wilcox's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Polish is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Wilcox tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Polish counters by clinching up.

Polish can't get the takedown.
Gareth Wilcox has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Polish.
Wilcox leaning against his opponent.
Wilcox pushes off an throws an elbow but Polish leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Wilcox is trying to push Polish away but Polish has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Still in the clinch, Wilcox scores with a nice short uppercut.
A nice left hand lands by Wilcox.
Polish blocks the elbow strike.

Come on Wilcox - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Wilcox works on Polish's body with a couple of short punches.
Polish is looking to take this one to the mat.
Wilcox is looking to control Polish's arms but Polish gets an underhook and turns him. Now Wilcox has his back to the cage.

Wilcox manages to break the clinch.
Horrible takedown by Polish or perhaps it was just good defense by Wilcox which made him look bad.

Wilcox stops a takedown attempt from Polish.
Polish is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Wilcox to keep the fight standing.

Wilcox lands with a short shot to the head.
Wilcox tries to land knees in the clinch but Polish avoids the damage to the body.

Wilcox pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Polish fails to pull guard.
Polish misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Wilcox.
Wilcox prevents a takedown attempt there.
Wilcox lands a hook that snaps the head of Polish backwards.
Wilcox misses with a body punch.
Polish drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
A bit of stalling here from Wilcox.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gareth Wilcox dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Wilcox tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
The fight stays on the outside here - Wilcox looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Wilcox swings for the body but Polish moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Polish shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Wilcox defends it nicely.
We've been told by Wilcox's head coaches at Academia Ipanema that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

and Polish counters with a lovely shot to the body.
