Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sam Wangu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wangu has chosen Lux Aeterna (go to 3:21) as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, John Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Sam Wangu!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Ryoma Takatsuka and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith throws a wild body kick that Wangu sees coming a mile off.
Wangu's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Wangu duly obliges.


It looks like John Smith has been cut.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Wangu throws a right and a left that both miss.

Wangu gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Smith has picked Wangu up - he's going for a ride! Smith dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Wangu tries to get to full guard but Smith has control of the leg.

Smith wants to work for an arm triangle but Wangu is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wangu wants to control but Smith is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Smith is trying to work for a kimura but Wangu is defending well.
Wangu is looking to control Smith's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Wangu avoid being mounted?

Smith is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Wangu is just riding it out for now. Smith eventually gives up the hold.

Smith looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Smith is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The fighters are battling for position here. Wangu manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Wangu is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Smith has gone for a leg lock! Wangu slips out almost immediately though and dives into Smith's guard.

Wangu throwing strikes but missing.
Wangu working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Smith avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Wangu postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Smith is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Wangu, into his guard.

Wangu not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Wangu looking to control but Smith passes into half guard.

Smith is looking for a kimura here.
Wangu is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Smith is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith blocks the strikes from Wangu.

Smith stops Wangu from getting back to his feet.

Wangu wants to get back to his feet but Smith is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Smith is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Wangu is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Wangu has escaped and now he's on top!
Wangu wants to stand and escape but instead Smith has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sam Wangu dominated that round.
The cut man is working on John Smith's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Wangu moves in looking to clinch but Smith pushes him off.
Smith throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Wangu shoots in for a takedown but Smith shows good takedown defense.

Smith bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Smith tries for a kimura but Wangu is defending well.

Smith tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Smith has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Smith is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Wangu looks calm but he's in trouble here. Smith gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Wangu is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Smith lets go of the hold and Wangu can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). John Smith!
