0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Isaiah Martinez! The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Columbo Gatti and Franklyn Lucas.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sheppard is looking to clinch. Sheppard closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Sheppard wants to work for an arm triangle but Martinez is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Sheppard looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Sheppard stops Martinez from getting back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Sheppard is looking to stand up but he'll have to free his leg first. Instead, Martinez manages to get to full guard. Martinez is trying to control the position but Sheppard postures up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Martinez looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Martinez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Sheppard gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Martinez wants to stand up but Sheppard is controlling him. Martinez wants to sweep but no luck. Sheppard controlling from the top position. Martinez is looking to stand up but Sheppard isn't so interested in that idea. Sheppard might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sheppard stopping the sweep attempt from Martinez. Sheppard trying to stand up but can't free himself from Martinez's guard. Sheppard tries to free his leg and advance position but Martinez is retaining full guard. Martinez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Martinez wants to sweep here but Sheppard controlling him for the moment. Sheppard looking to pass the guard. Sheppard knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Martinez on the ground. Martinez looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Martinez isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Sheppard stacks Martinez on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Sheppard! Martinez is in a bad spot here and he knows it... just holding on for now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The referee tells the fighters to keep busy. Martinez is trying to control Sheppard's posture but Sheppard avoids it. Sheppard is looking to take a break and control but Martinez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Sheppard working the ground and pound from side control. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Martinez is looking to regain half guard here but Sheppard keeps moving and retains side control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Tom Sheppard will probably get the nod. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Sheppard breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Sheppard shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Sheppard wants to control from the top but Martinez keeps moving. Martinez controls Sheppard momentarily but Sheppard frees himself. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sheppard is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

We're going to have a standup here because Tom Sheppard wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Sheppard scores with a takedown into Martinez's guard. Martinez has his foot on Sheppard's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sheppard works his way back into a safe position though. Martinez wants to stand and escape but Sheppard is having none of it. Martinez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Sheppard defends it easily. Martinez is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Martinez is breathing heavily. Sheppard landing some decent shots from guard.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Martinez prevents Sheppard from improving position. Sheppard controls the position from side control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sheppard has knee on belly momentarily but Martinez bucks him off and regains half guard. Martinez is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Sheppard trying to control from Martinez's half guard. Martinez has other ideas though and has regained full guard. Martinez is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Tom Sheppard overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Sheppard trying to control but Martinez is working from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sheppard not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Sheppard trying to control the position from guard on top but Martinez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Martinez wants to sweep but no luck. Sheppard trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Tom Sheppard. Martinez moves out of range as Sheppard throws a body kick.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Martinez tries for a takedown but Sheppard circles away easily and Sheppard counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Martinez wants to get back to full guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Tom Sheppard dominated that second round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Sheppard looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Sheppard scores with a short punch from the bottom. Martinez pushing down on Sheppard's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Martinez is looking to advance position but Sheppard won't allow it. Sheppard tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land. Martinez takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Sheppard wants to get back to his feet. Martinez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sheppard keeps working. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Isaiah Martinez hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Sheppard shoots for a double leg takedown but Martinez sprawls well. He's pushed Sheppard's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Sheppard is struggling to control the position. Sheppard tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Martinez just stands there and leans against the cage. Martinez has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate. Sheppard stalling.

And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Tom Sheppard. Well Sheppard has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win...
