Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mike Carpenter! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hiro Yamaguchi! The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Yukihiro Shimada and Kenichi Hosakawa.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Carpenter drives through with a takedown into guard. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Yamaguchi is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Carpenter really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Carpenter wants to stand and escape but instead Yamaguchi has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard. Carpenter looking to hit a scissor sweep but Yamaguchi is one step ahead there. Carpenter is striking from the bottom but Yamaguchi uses the opportunity to pass into half guard. Carpenter keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Yamaguchi performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Yamaguchi wants to stand up but Carpenter is controlling the position.
Carpenter is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Carpenter is working hard here to advance position. Yamaguchi throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Yamaguchi works his way into side control. Yamaguchi trying to control the position but Carpenter is working away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Yamaguchi is trying to get an arm triangle but Carpenter is defending well. Yamaguchi wants to stand but Carpenter is controlling his arm. Yamaguchi works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Yamaguchi working the head with strikes. Yamaguchi wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Carpenter, who protects the arm well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Yamaguchi in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... Carpenter is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:19 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Hiro Yamaguchi! Hiro Yamaguchi was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
