PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Marlon Yates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Reed (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Steve Reed told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Marlon Yates!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Steve Reed!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Donald Grub and Daniel Bishop.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yates throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Reed tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Yates swivels and escapes.
Yates scores with a kick to the midsection.
Reed throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Reed tries for a takedown but Yates sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Yates is defended easily by Reed.
Reed on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Yates throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Reed.
Yates fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Yates connects with a high kick.
Yates leaves Reed with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Marlon Yates has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Steve Reed.
Yates will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Yates dives in and grabs Reed's left leg, looking for a takedown. Reed pushes down on Yates's head and hops out.
Reed is looking to clinch.
Yates closes the distance and clinches up with Reed, looking for a takedown. Yates pushes Reed against the cage but Reed circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Yates shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Reed is trying to defend but Yates finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Yates wants to get back to his feet.
Yates is breathing heavily.
Reed is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.

Reed actively working from the bottom here.

Reed is looking for a sweep. Yates is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Yates wants to lay and pray for a moment but Reed keeps working.

Yates seems to be working for a kimura but Reed defends the submission attempt.

Yates is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Reed sees it coming and defends easily.

Reed is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Yates pulls his head out easily.
Reed controlling the position for now.

Yates is looking for a kimura but Reed is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Yates to get the leverage.

Yates seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Reed does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Yates is trying to work for a kimura but Reed is defending well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Reed wants to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Yates is working for a submission of some sort.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Reed wants to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Reed throws a sloppy head kick and Yates moves out of range easily.
Yates misses with a takedown attempt - Reed sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Reed fails with the takedown.
Yates tries to clinch but Reed moves out of range.
Yates moves in looking to clinch but Reed pushes him off.
Horrible takedown by Yates or perhaps it was just good defense by Reed which made him look bad.
Reed defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Yates.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Marlon Yates. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Reed takes one to the side of the head.
Yates gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Reed counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Yates!

Reed content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Yates is looking for a sweep.
Reed is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Yates will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Reed stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Yates closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Yates lands in his opponent's guard.

Yates drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Reed manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Yates has Reed in his guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Reed slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Let's hope that Reed has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Yates working for submissions but it's allowed Reed to get to half guard.

Reed performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Steve Reed hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Yates fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Yates looks to land a left hand but Reed moved out of range nicely.
Reed shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Yates as he avoids it easily.
Yates displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Reed.
Reed stuffs the takedown.
Reed looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Reed gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Yates.
Reed avoids the head kick by Yates.
Reed throws a nice looking combination but Yates bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steve Reed showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Yates shoots in but Reed avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Yates misses with the combination.
Reed throws a head kick but Yates moves out of range.
Reed shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Yates eats them both and turns towards Reed to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Reed misses with a body kick.
Yates tries for a takedown but Reed circles away easily

and Reed counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Reed sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Yates is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Reed advances to half guard.
Yates wants to control but Reed is keeping busy.
Reed is nestled in close to Yates, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Yates wants to improve his position but Reed is controlling well.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Yates moves into full guard.

Reed gets to his feet - Yates follows without any prompting.

Reed throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Yates tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Reed is in Yates's guard.
Yates working a defensive guard but Reed manages to pass into side control anyway.
Reed takes a little break here. Yates wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Reed tries to move into full mount but can't pass Yates's legs.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Yates looking for a sweep but Reed has passed into full mount! Oh no!

Reed looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Reed controlling the position easily from mount.
Reed is trying to control here but Yates has managed to regain half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Reed is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Yates has managed to free his arm - good work.
Reed keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Yates looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Steve Reed has got the better of the ground game so far.
Yates is trying to control but can't.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Yates avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Reed.

And that's the end of the fight!
Steve Reed comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Reed has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
