Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kirk Walker! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Leto Savish! The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Colin Fray and Paul Gruel.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Savish misses with a body shot.
Walker avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Walker ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Savish moves away. Walker on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Savish throws a hook but Walker avoids it easily. Walker uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Savish. Savish lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Walker backs up against the cage.
It looks like Kirk Walker has been cut. Walker fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Walker shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Savish pinned against the cage. Savish gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Walker slips under a jab from Savish. Walker goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
That's one minute gone in the round. Savish throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Walker swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Leto Savish seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Walker takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
A looping hook to the body misses from Savish. Walker does a little dance to reset his feet. Savish throws a leg kick but Walker moved away. Savish swings away with a body shot that misses
and Walker counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Walker moves into the clinch. Walker tries for a takedown. No joy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kirk Walker. That's going to take a lot out of him. Savish's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Savish scores with a sloppy right hand. Walker should have avoided that one.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Walker looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Walker keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Savish. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Walker shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Savish trying to control from the bottom.
Savish is looking for a sweep. Walker is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Walker lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Walker thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Savish blocking the ground and pound attempt from Walker. The fighters are battling for position here. Savish manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Savish working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Walker. Walker looking to sit in guard and control but Savish gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Savish in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Savish trying to stand up but can't free himself from Walker's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Walker preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Walker is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Walker wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Walker on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Walker tries to get out of the position. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Kirk Walker wasn't doing enough on the ground. Walker shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Savish as he avoids it easily. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Leto Savish dominated that round. The cut man is working on Kirk Walker's cut. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Walker dodges the punch combination from Savish.
Walker tries to close the distance and clinch up but Savish swats him away and circles back towards the center. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Walker. Walker looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Good exchange - Savish coming out on top. Savish throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Walker throws a series of punches but Savish moves out of range. Sloppy strikes from Savish. Those never looked like landing. Walker wants to clinch. Savish throws a jab when Walker was well out of range. Kirk Walker is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
That's one minute gone in the round. Savish throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Savish fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Walker manages to avoid it. Savish looks to land a left hand but Walker moved out of range nicely. Savish misses with a right hand so Walker counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Walker controls from within his opponent's guard. Our spies down at at TAP ROOT -/- 10 Coaches / Great Sparring / Value inform us that Savish has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off? Walker is looking to pass into half guard but Savish pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Savish is in guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Savish is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Walker seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
We're going to have a standup here because Kirk Walker wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Walker moves out of range of the body kick from Savish.
Savish lands a head shot. Walker looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. We've been told by Walker's head coaches at Steel Penn/Heavy Hands Gym that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Walker moves out of range as Savish strikes. Walker on the wrong end of a nice hook. Savish throws a lazy right hand but Walker sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Savish throws out a loose jab but Walker uses good head movement to avoid it. Walker lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Savish circles away quickly and effectively. Walker closes the distance and clinches up with Savish, looking for a takedown. Walker pushes Savish against the cage but Savish circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Walker on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere. Walker tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Savish misses with a straight right. Savish throws an overhand right that lands on Walker's shoulder, as Walker tries to avoid the shot. Leto Savish is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Savish sizes up Walker with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Savish lands the left hand.
