PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Chang Velez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gbengo Onyano (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chang Velez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gbengo Onyano!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Wesley Smith and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Onyano tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Onyano wants to clinch up but Velez keeps it at a distance.

Onyano rushes Velez and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Velez turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Onyano can't do much from the bottom here.
Onyano trying to control but Velez flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back!
Onyano tries to roll but Velez sticks to his back.
Velez is trying to stick to Onyano's back but Onyano is turning into Velez. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Velez's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Onyano.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Velez keeping moving, preventing Onyano from controlling successfully.
Velez wants to stand and escape but Onyano is having none of it.
Onyano looking to sit in guard and control but Velez gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Velez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Onyano seems keen to control Velez's posture.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Onyano controls Velez momentarily but Velez frees himself.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Onyano can do anything to dispel that myth.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Gbengo Onyano wasn't active enough on the ground.
Onyano shoots in for a double leg but Velez sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Onyano feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Onyano working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Velez's head.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Onyano's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Gbengo Onyano has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Onyano shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Onyano showed some decent athleticism there.
Velez is staying active underneath Onyano, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Gbengo Onyano.
Onyano is looking to clinch.
Onyano fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Onyano throws a head kick that misses.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Onyano.
Chang Velez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gbengo Onyano.

Onyano shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Onyano showed some decent athleticism there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gbengo Onyano dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Onyano dives in and grabs Velez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Velez pushes down on Onyano's head and hops out.

Onyano clinches with his opponent.

Onyano lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Onyano wants to stand up but Velez has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Onyano throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Velez to regain full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Onyano throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Velez works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Onyano stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Velez swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Onyano looking to sit in guard and control but Velez gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Onyano trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Onyano wants to control but Velez passes easily into half guard.
Onyano wants to improve his position but Velez is controlling well.
Onyano wants to sweep but Velez has passed to side control!
Onyano wants to control but Velez postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Onyano manages to get back to half guard.
Onyano holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Onyano flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Velez prevents Onyano from improving his position.
Onyano is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Chang Velez.

Onyano rushes Velez and presses him up against the cage.
Velez is looking for a takedown.
Onyano tries to pull guard but Velez forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Onyano effectively controlling the action here.
Velez is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Onyano pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Onyano decides to pull guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gbengo Onyano showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Velez avoids a kick to the body.

Onyano dives in and scores a takedown into Velez's guard.
Velez is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Onyano is controlling him.
Onyano tries to stand but Velez is controlling from the bottom.
Onyano stays in close to Velez's body and controls the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.

We're going to have a standup here because Chang Velez wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Onyano wants to clinch.

Onyano closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Velez quickly recovers to half guard.
Still in half guard, Onyano seems content to control.
Velez really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Velez looks like he's trying to stand up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Gbengo Onyano has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Onyano moves into the clinch successfully.
Onyano jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Velez walks away with a smile on his face. Onyano gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Danga de danga de dang - Onyano scores with a four punch combination!


It looks like Chang Velez has been cut.
Onyano misses the body punch

and Velez counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Velez tries to stand but Onyano is controlling from the bottom.
Onyano trying to keep a closed guard but Velez is proving a slippery customer.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Chang Velez has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Onyano fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Onyano takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Onyano moves to clinch but Velez breaks away

so Velez counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Velez has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Onyano is proving hard to escape from.
Onyano looking to control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

We're going to have a standup here because Chang Velez wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Onyano tries for a takedown but Velez sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Onyano shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Onyano is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Chang Velez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Gbengo Onyano is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Onyano blocks the strikes from Velez.

And that's the end of the fight!
Gbengo Onyano comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Onyano has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
