PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Blaine Woodard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Sloan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rick Sloan told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Blaine Woodard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rick Sloan!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Colin Fray and Micheangelo Fripello.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sloan blocks a head kick by Woodard.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Sloan enables Woodard to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Sloan manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Sloan keeping moving, preventing Woodard from controlling successfully.
Sloan is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Woodard has gone for a leg lock! Sloan slips out almost immediately though and dives into Woodard's guard.

Woodard is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Sloan defends well.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sloan is looking to work some ground and pound but Woodard has wrist control.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Sloan throws a combination. Woodard tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Sloan scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Sloan tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Woodard paws at him with a jab and circles away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sloan throws a right hand that Woodard ducks under and follows up with a left that Woodard also avoids with ease.

and Sloan counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Sloan.
Woodard trying to stall but Sloan improves his position.
Sloan tries to pull guard but Woodard forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Sloan is trying to break the clinch but Woodard has him pressed against the cage.

Sloan manages to break the clinch.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Sloan misses with a body shot.
Sloan throws a right and a left that Woodard avoids nicely.
Woodard shoots in but Sloan avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Woodard keeps the fight on the outside.
Sloan fails in his attempt to clinch.
Sloan defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Woodard.
Sloan tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Sloan connects with a solid leg kick.
Woodard throws a head kick that misses
and Sloan makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Sloan misses with the combination.

Woodard closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Woodard lands in his opponent's guard.
Woodard is breathing heavily.

Woodard passes Sloan's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Woodard has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Woodard tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Blaine Woodard will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Woodard wants to clinch up but Sloan keeps it at a distance.
Sloan moves out of range of the strikes.
Woodard throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Sloan looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Woodard!
Woodard manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Woodard controlling the position well.
Sloan seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Woodard does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Woodard moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Sloan sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Woodard's guard.
Sloan thows a huge punch but Woodard dodges it nicely.
Sloan not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Sloan trying to mount his opponent but Woodard defends it.
Blaine Woodard overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Woodard is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Sloan's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Sloan's back!

Woodard controlling the position well here. Sloan rolled but Woodard kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

You know, I was talking to some of our celebrities at ringside tonight and they were split right down the middle on who was going to win this fight.
Woodard wants to control but Sloan is keeping busy.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Blaine Woodard wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Woodard throws a right and a left that both miss.
Woodard is looking to clinch but Sloan is avoiding it.
Woodard looks for a takedown but Sloan sprawls well.

and Sloan counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Sloan throws a sloppy head kick and Woodard moves out of range easily.
Sloan fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Woodard drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Sloan controls Woodard momentarily but Woodard frees himself.
Woodard is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Woodard tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Sloan swivels and escapes.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Sloan is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Blaine Woodard will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Sloan throws a body kick that misses.
Sloan lands with a slapping head kick.
Woodard drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Sloan throws a chopping leg kick but Woodard manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Woodard lands a nice hook to Sloan's body. Sloan takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Sloan shoots in looking for a takedown but Woodard manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Sloan's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Woodard moves to clinch but Sloan breaks away
and Sloan counters with a solid body kick.
Sloan misses with an uppercut.
Sloan tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Woodard paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Sloan lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Woodard backs up against the cage.
Sloan takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Sloan throws a head kick that half lands.
Woodard circles away from the clinch attempt.
Sloan shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Woodard as he avoids it easily.

Rick Sloan seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Woodard dives in for a single leg takedown but Sloan sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
The referee calls for Woodard to work.
Sloan tries to break the clinch but Woodard is controlling the position.

Woodard can't get the takedown.
Sloan scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Sloan has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Woodard has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Sloan regains guard immediately.
Sloan tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Woodard wants to control from the top but Sloan keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Woodard is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Blaine Woodard has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Woodard throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Woodard tries to clinch up but Sloan circles away and keeps his distance.
Woodard looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Sloan is fending him off so far but Woodard persists. Nope, Sloan circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Blaine Woodard. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Woodard shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Sloan sprawls well. Sloan wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Woodard gets slowly back to his feet.

I would just about give that final round to Rick Sloan.
I think Woodard has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
