Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, David Tennant! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jay Yap! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Yuuki Gou and Sosuke Kotani.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Yap looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. A telegraphed right hand from Tennant misses the target. Tennant fails to land with a series of punches.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Tennant. Tennant is trying hard to land a takedown here. Yap sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Tennant misses with a right hand and Yap cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Sloppy strikes from Yap. Those never looked like landing. Tennant shoots for a double leg takedown but Yap sprawls well. He's pushed Tennant's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for David Tennant. That's going to take a lot out of him. Yap fails to land with a series of punches.
Yap tries to bum rush Tennant with a series of wild strikes but Tennant uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Tennant throws a hook but Yap avoids it easily. Tennant lands a jab followed by a vicious hook that sends Yap sprawling to the canvas. Tennant follows him down, looking for the kill. Can Yap hang on?
Yap is rocked!
It looks like Jay Yap has been cut. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Tennant scoring with strikes to the body and head. Yap is still in real trouble! Can Tennant finish him? Tennant not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Ground and pound from Tennant. Yap is trying to stand back up but Tennant is controlling him
Yap wants to control but Tennant is keeping busy and won't allow it. Tennant lands a big elbow from half guard. That looks like it's hurt Yap quite badly. Yap pulls Tennant in close trying to recover. Tennant postures up and lands two really hard shots that put Yap on queer street! The ref takes a look and decides to call an end to the fight! Possibly an early stoppage but Yap doesn't seem to be complaining too much.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). David Tennant! David Tennant retains his welterweight title! A very excited looking David Tennant rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
