Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Paul Meyer! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hideo Kono! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kono waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Meyer. Kono digs a good body shot into Meyer's ribs. Meyer takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Kono lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Kono. Kono throws a shot to the body.
Meyer closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Kono to the mat! Kono manages to get full guard. Meyer throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Kono works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Meyer is stalling in the full guard. Kono is adopting a defensive guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Meyer in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kono is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Meyer postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Meyer won't allow Kono to get back to his feet. Meyer drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Meyer jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Meyer has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. Meyer is looking to work some ground and pound but Kono has wrist control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Meyer stops Kono from standing up. Meyer stopping the sweep attempt from Kono. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Kono wants to get back to his feet but Meyer is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Kono has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Meyer with a nice head shot there. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Meyer throws a big right hand that misses. Kono throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Kono wants to get back to his feet but Meyer is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Meyer looking to pass the guard. Meyer postures up in Kono's guard and throws a big left but Kono blocks it. Meyer throwing strikes from guard but Kono blocks nicely. Meyer throws a big elbow that misses.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kono wants to stand but Meyer is controlling the position. Meyer with a flurry of punches that miss. Kono preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Meyer wants to control from the top but Kono keeps moving. Kono has his hands on Meyer's head, controlling the position. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Meyer prevents Kono from getting back to his feet. Kono keeping moving, preventing Meyer from controlling successfully.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. A nice combination there by Kono.
Kono catches Meyer with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong! Meyer keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Kono. Kono connects with a solid leg kick. Meyer shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kono throws a shot from downtown. Meyer moves away and avoids it. Kono lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Meyer circles away quickly and effectively. Kono cracks Meyer with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Nice cross by Kono. Kono throws a series of punches but Meyer avoids them all with ease. Meyer takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Nice shot lands for Kono. Kono tries to bum rush Meyer with a series of wild strikes but Meyer uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Kono thows a left - swing and a miss! Hideo Kono seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Meyer shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kono defends it nicely. Kono misses with a jab, cross combination.
Meyer slips a jab from Kono. Kono looks to land a combination. Meyer sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Meyer is rocked! Kono connects with a good right hand that stumbles Meyer. Meyer circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Oh Meyer is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! This has been an exciting period of action! Kono misses with the combination.
Kono drops Meyer with a straight left! Oh this is bad for Meyer! Kono dives in and starts dropping bombs - the referee has no choice but to step in and save him!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Hideo Kono! During a confident post fight interview, Hideo Kono thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
