The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Beaver shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Aguirre sprawls well. Aguirre wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Beaver gets slowly back to his feet. Beaver throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Aguirre was covering up waiting for the punch and Beaver finishes the takedown easily into guard. Aguirre working a defensive guard here.
Beaver working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Aguirre's head. Beaver missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Beaver has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Beaver is looking to work some ground and pound but Aguirre has wrist control. Beaver drops back, looking for a kneebar! Aguirre looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Aguirre looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Aguirre! Beaver is looking to reverse the position. Beaver is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Beaver keeps trying to improve his position. Aguirre happy to just control the position for now. Beaver regains half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Aguirre wants to work for an arm triangle but Beaver is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Beaver moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Aguirre got a little sloppy there for a moment and Beaver has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Aguirre has managed to get both his arms back between Beaver's legs - danger averted. Aguirre works a leg free and moves into half guard. Aguirre scoring with strikes to the body and head. Beaver wants to improve his position but Aguirre is controlling well.
Beaver won't allow Aguirre to pass to mount. Beaver makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Beaver. Aguirre avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Beaver doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Aguirre might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Beaver is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Beaver throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Aguirre passes Beaver's left leg - he's now in half guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Beaver actively working from the bottom here. Beaver looks winded! Beaver looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Beaver on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Beaver punching from the bottom.
Beaver is trying to get back to full guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Beaver can do anything to dispel that myth. Aguirre scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Aguirre prevents Beaver from improving his position. Beaver manages to get to full guard.
Beaver looking for a sweep. Not yet Beaver, not yet. Beaver has a closed guard, preventing Aguirre from standing up. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Beaver working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Aguirre doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Aguirre manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Beaver has a closed guard, preventing Aguirre from standing up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Aguirre trying to control but Beaver is working from the bottom. Aguirre advances position into side control! Aguirre looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Aguirre trying to control the action but Beaver is working from the bottom. Beaver tries to buck Aguirre off but Aguirre is having none of it. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Beaver regains half guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Beaver wants to improve his position but Aguirre is controlling well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Matthew Beaver dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Beaver fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Aguirre to the ground. Beaver is now in Aguirre's guard. Aguirre looking to control.
Beaver throws a big elbow that misses. Aguirre working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Beaver. Aguirre throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Aguirre is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Beaver stands and throws Aguirre's legs to the side, diving into side control. Beaver is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Aguirre knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Beaver tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Beaver has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Aguirre tries to bench press Beaver off him but Beaver keeps the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Beaver cracks Aguirre with a big elbow. Aguirre is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Beaver working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Beaver moves into full mount! Beaver in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Beaver cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Beaver has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Aguirre's face.
Beaver lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Aguirre hang on? Beaver lands a heavy elbow. Aguirre could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Aguirre takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Beaver's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.
