Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
18 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Billy Do! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
31 - 26 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Vitor Gracie! The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Sosuke Kotani and Shigeki Sano.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gracie tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Do defends well and Gracie ends up having to push Do into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Gracie blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Do breaks from the clinch.
Do misses with a looping right. Do throws a sloppy head kick and Gracie moves out of range easily. Do scores with a hook to the body. Gracie takes a step back and tries to catch his breath. Do misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Billy Do seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Do shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gracie pinned against the cage. Gracie gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Gracie shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Do loads up on a big right hand but Gracie slips the punch. Do lands a jab. Gracie shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Do defends it nicely. Billy Do has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Vitor Gracie. Gracie fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Nice takedown defense from Do. No joy for Gracie on that attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Do scores with a nice strike. Gracie tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Do defends well and Gracie ends up having to push Do into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Gracie blocks an elbow strike from Do.
Do tries to land knees in the clinch but Gracie avoids the damage to the body. Do crunches a lovely knee into Gracie's ribcage. Do throws an elbow but it's blocked.
Do prevents a takedown attempt there.
Do throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Gracie blocks the elbow strike.
Do avoids a wild elbow strike from Gracie. Gracie blocks an elbow strike. Do manages to break the clinch.
Do misses with a two punch combination.
A jab from Do misses. Do shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Gracie manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Do wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving. Do throwing strikes but missing. Gracie working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Do. Gracie is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Do has his hands clasped together but Gracie extends and breaks Do's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Gracie.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:41 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Vitor Gracie! Vitor Gracie is the new welterweight champion! Vitor Gracie decided to call for a title shot in his post fight interview, which was very strange given the fact this fight was for a title and he's already the champion. I guess that's what getting punched in the head does for you.
