Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brian Johnson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Droski De La Cruz! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Emerson Jorge and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! De La Cruz tries to clinch up and Johnson counters with a left and a right that stings De La Cruz. De La Cruz wants to clinch and Johnson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in De La Cruz's guard. Johnson chips away with some ground and pound. De La Cruz controls Johnson momentarily but Johnson frees himself. This has been an exciting period of action! Johnson passes De La Cruz's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Johnson is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! De La Cruz in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Johnson landing strikes, looking to finish! Johnson landing shots from mount. Johnson goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now De La Cruz is on top in guard.
De La Cruz got a little sloppy there for a moment and Johnson has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, De La Cruz has managed to get both his arms back between Johnson's legs - danger averted. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Johnson keeping moving, preventing De La Cruz from controlling successfully. De La Cruz throws a big right hand that misses. Johnson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. De La Cruz doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Johnson is tightening it up a little... De La Cruz has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! De La Cruz reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! De La Cruz taps out! Nice BJJ there by Johnson!
