PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Bobby Caldwell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thomas Formo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Bobby Caldwell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Thomas Formo!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Gregory Folan and Ian Loll.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Formo doesn't manage to clinch there - Caldwell circles away.

Caldwell gets a takedown into half guard.
Caldwell wants to stand but Formo has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Caldwell really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Caldwell trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Formo tries to roll over but Caldwell keeps him under control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Caldwell wants to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Caldwell stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Formo to get to his feet.

Formo takes the fight into the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Formo jumps guard.

Caldwell stands and steps away. Formo gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Caldwell tries a head kick but it misses.

Formo feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Formo trying to control the position from guard on top but Caldwell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Formo engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Caldwell is pulling down on Formo's head. It's preventing any offense from Formo, at least for the moment.

Caldwell is looking to stand up but Formo isn't so interested in that idea.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Thomas Formo.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Caldwell is defended easily by Formo.

Formo closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Caldwell's guard.

Caldwell is trying to keep Formo in close.
Formo missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Formo is looking to advance position but Caldwell has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Formo wants to control but Caldwell is having none of it.
Caldwell wants to control the pace but Formo is squirming around nicely.
Caldwell is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Formo is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Formo wants to try and get back to his feet.

Caldwell stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Caldwell is breathing heavily.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Formo.
Formo working away.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Thomas Formo will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Formo throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Caldwell tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Formo is in Caldwell's guard.
Formo looking to sit in guard and control but Caldwell gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Formo will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Caldwell prevents Formo from getting back to his feet.
Formo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Caldwell wants to stand but Formo is controlling his posture from full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Bobby Caldwell.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Formo has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Caldwell is trying to keep an underhook but Formo manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Formo is looking to pass Caldwell's guard but actually Caldwell recovers to full guard.
Caldwell is pulling down on Formo's head to control his posture.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Formo wants to stand and escape but instead Caldwell has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Formo has a closed guard, preventing Caldwell from standing up.
Formo lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Caldwell!
Formo cracks Caldwell with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Formo trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Caldwell regains half guard.
Formo trying to pass the guard but Caldwell defending well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Formo is looking to take a break and control but Caldwell is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Formo tries to pass to full mount but Caldwell defends it.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Thomas Formo wasn't active enough on the ground.

Formo closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Caldwell quickly recovers to half guard.
Formo is pressing down on Caldwell's thigh, looking to free his foot. Caldwell is holding on for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Thomas Formo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Formo is looking to clinch.
Formo tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Caldwell manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
A combination from Formo does no damage.
Formo tries to clinch there but Caldwell circles away.
A head kick misses from Formo.

Caldwell drags the fight down to the ground.
Formo has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Caldwell is proving hard to escape from.
Thomas Formo has got the better of the ground game so far.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Caldwell is pulling down on Formo's head to control his posture.

Formo closes the distance and pushes Caldwell back into the cage.

Formo thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Caldwell's head.
Formo is looking to advance position but Caldwell won't allow it.
Caldwell is pressing down on Formo's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Thomas Formo hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Formo keeps the fight on the outside.
Formo swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Formo fails to land with a series of punches.

Formo closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Caldwell did well to prevent Formo getting side control.
Formo takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Caldwell controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.

Formo is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Caldwell is just riding it out for now. Formo eventually gives up the hold.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Formo is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Thomas Formo comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Formo has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
