Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ramazan Abdulkerimov! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jon Jhonson! The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Dmitry Maklakov and Vladimir Khabensky.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jhonson lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Abdulkerimov circles away quickly and effectively. Jhonson swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Abdulkerimov scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Abdulkerimov happy to just control the position for now. Jhonson taking punishment in the form of punches.
Abdulkerimov is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position. Abdulkerimov prevents Jhonson from escaping the position. Abdulkerimov thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Abdulkerimov working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Abdulkerimov cracks Jhonson with a big elbow. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! The referee tells the fighters to keep busy. Jhonson wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jhonson on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Jhonson is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here. Jhonson is working to avoid the ground and pound but Abdulkerimov connects with a decent elbow. Jhonson is not in a great position here, taking some shots. Abdulkerimov scores with a couple of short elbows. Abdulkerimov tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Abdulkerimov has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Jhonson is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Abdulkerimov tries for a kimura but Jhonson is defending well. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Jhonson is pushing Abdulkerimov's head away, looking to escape. Abdulkerimov manages to hold on to the position though.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Abdulkerimov controls the position from side control. Abdulkerimov wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Jhonson, who protects the arm well. Jhonson is letting Abdulkerimov control him for a moment. Jhonson tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops. Abdulkerimov has his arm under Jhonson's chin here. Game over son! Abdulkerimov squeezes tightly and Jhonson is forced to tap out!
