PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Chang Townsend (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anthony Pettis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pettis has chosen Alab ng Puso-Abra as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The key to victory for Chang Townsend has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chang Townsend!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Anthony Pettis!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Paul Gruel and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pettis shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Townsend pinned against the cage. Townsend gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Pettis looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Townsend looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Pettis is fending him off so far but Townsend persists. Nope, Pettis circles away and we're back to standing.
Pettis takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Townsend is looking to slow Pettis down with leg kicks.

Townsend shoots in and gets a takedown into Pettis's guard.
Townsend wants to stand and escape but instead Pettis has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Pettis is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Townsend is just riding it out for now. Pettis eventually gives up the hold.

Pettis takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Townsend missing with punches from the bottom.
Pettis stops Townsend from getting back to his feet.
Pettis is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Pettis's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Townsend tries to roll over but Pettis keeps him under control.
Townsend knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Pettis on the ground.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Anthony Pettis was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Pettis shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Townsend connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Townsend tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Anthony Pettis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Pettis is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Townsend's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Townsend is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

Townsend is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Townsend wants to lay and pray for a moment but Pettis keeps working.
Pettis is controlling Townsend's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Pettis looks like he's trying to stand up.

Pettis is defending against the submission attempts here by Townsend.

Connects with an elbow from the bottom, proving to the judges that he's still active off his back.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That was a close round but I would say that Chang Townsend will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Townsend tries for a takedown but Pettis sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Pettis has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.

Townsend wants to stand and escape but instead Pettis has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Pettis is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Pettis got a little sloppy there for a moment and Townsend has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Pettis has managed to get both his arms back between Townsend's legs - danger averted.

Townsend is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Pettis defends well.
Townsend is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Pettis dives into side control.
Townsend tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.

Pettis has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for Townsend! Can he survive? No! He's out! Pettis gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:52 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Anthony Pettis!
After winning the bout, Anthony Pettis thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
