Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Barton Mathis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, E Pha Balise To! The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Roger Salmon and Ryoma Takatsuka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Balise To shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Mathis counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Mathis. Mathis is standing up over Balise To. Balise To looks to escape but Mathis dives into side control.
Balise To is trying to buck Mathis off. Mathis will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Balise To is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mathis misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Balise To is pushing Mathis's head away, looking to escape. Mathis manages to hold on to the position though. Mathis controlling the position from side mount. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Balise To pushes Mathis away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Mathis gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Mathis taking a breather here.

Mathis takes a little break here. Balise To wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Balise To tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck. Mathis punching from mount but Balise To doing a good job of avoiding damage. Mathis controlling his opponent. Balise To is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Balise To tries to buck Mathis off but Mathis takes his back! Balise To controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position. Mathis is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Balise To is defending well though. Mathis let's go of the attempt for now. Balise To holding both Mathis 's hands and preventing any damage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mathis throwing sloppy strikes. Balise To is trying to get back to his feet but Mathis has full control of the position and if anything, Balise To has just worked his way into a worse spot. Mathis biding his time, looking for the opening.
Balise To wants to get back to his feet. Mathis is riding his opponent, not letting Balise To buck him off. Balise To controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mathis misses with punches from the back. Balise To looking to stop the rear naked choke attempt by controlling the hands. A bit of a pause in the action here. Mathis controlling the positon. Balise To wants to get back to his feet. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Barton Mathis will probably get the nod. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Mathis moves into the clinch. Balise To wants a takedown.
Balise To looking for a takedown. Balise To is looking to take this one to the mat. Barton Mathis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of E Pha Balise To. Balise To wants a takedown but no success here.
Balise To gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Mathis.
Mathis gets control of Balise To's arms and successfully pulls guard. Mathis will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Mathis has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Balise To can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Balise To looking to sit in guard and control but Mathis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Mathis pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Balise To is keeping the position for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mathis prevents Balise To from getting back to his feet. Mathis is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Mathis's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Mathis engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Balise To wants to stand and escape but Mathis is having none of it. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Mathis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Mathis sitting in guard here, content to control. Balise To wants to stand but Mathis is controlling the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Barton Mathis just wasn't active enough. Balise To shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Mathis pinned against the cage. Mathis gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Balise To darts in looking for a takedown but Mathis gets double underhooks and turns Balise To into the cage. Balise To is breathing heavily. Balise To jumps guard but Mathis stands there with Balise To around his waist. Balise To gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Mathis breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Balise To shoots in and drives through. Mathis sprawls well. Balise To shoots in for a takedown but Mathis shows good takedown defense. Mathis throws a leg kick but Balise To sees it coming and moves out of range. Balise To has his takedown stuffed and Mathis counters with a series of strikes. Balise To will be more careful next time no doubt. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Mathis throws a wild body kick that Balise To sees coming a mile off. Balise To looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Mathis is fending him off so far but Balise To persists. Nope, Mathis circles away and we're back to standing. Mathis fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Balise To, pushing him back against the cage. Mathis taking a break, stalling in the clinch.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Balise To tries to pull guard but Mathis holds him up against the cage and eventually Balise To drops back down to his feet.
Mathis effectively controlling the action here. Balise To tries to stall but Mathis uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Mathis is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Balise To is defending well. Balise To drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Mathis gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Mathis is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace. Mathis jumps guard.
Balise To wants to control from the top but Mathis keeps moving.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Balise To looking to sit in guard and control but Mathis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Mathis wants to pass the guard but Balise To is keeping the position. Mathis looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Mathis shoots in but Balise To avoids the takedown attempt easily. Balise To tries to score a power double leg takedown but Mathis sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Balise To somewhat. Balise To shoots in and drives through. Mathis sprawls well. Balise To takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it. Mathis is trying hard to land a takedown here. Balise To sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Mathis shoots for a double leg takedown but Balise To sprawls well. He's pushed Mathis's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Barton Mathis. That's going to take a lot out of him. Mathis closes the distance and pushes Balise To back into the cage. Mathis has clasped his hands together around Balise To's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done. Balise To pushes Mathis away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Mathis gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Balise To takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Mathis misses with the ground and pound. Mathis prevents Balise To from escaping the position. Mathis working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Balise To tries to escape but Mathis is in control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mathis throwing shots but missing, from side control. Mathis moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now. Balise To tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck. Mathis won't let Balise To get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now. Mathis thowing shots but they're missing. Mathis really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Balise To is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

Mathis is riding his opponent, not letting Balise To buck him off. Mathis has his opponent's back and is working for the choke. Balise To looking to stop the rear naked choke attempt by controlling the hands. Mathis has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Balise To's body.
Balise To is trying to get back to his feet but Mathis has full control of the position and if anything, Balise To has just worked his way into a worse spot.
