Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Herbert Hernandez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Michal Materla! The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Matti Vanhoillinen and Johanna Lukiainen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hernandez bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Hernandez is staying tight to Materla's torso, preventing him from escaping. Hernandez trying to control the position but Materla is working away. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Materla can do anything to dispel that myth. Materla gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Materla wants to control but Hernandez is having none of it. Hernandez content just to control the position here. Materla is looking to get to half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hernandez working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. Hernandez looking to control but Materla is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Materla can't escape the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hernandez avoids the attempt from Materla to control. Materla tries to get back to half guard but can't. Hernandez connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Materla looks winded!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Materla tries to hold on but Hernandez postures up. Materla is looking to improve his position but Hernandez isn't that keen on the idea. Hernandez can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Materla is looking to escape. Materla wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Hernandez.
Materla is trying desperately to improve position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hernandez working Materla over with strikes here. Materla tries to hold on but Hernandez pushes him away. Hernandez sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it! Materla is just holding on here. Hernandez manages to take his back.
Hernandez is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Materla taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Hernandez.
