Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Marco Rivera! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dudley Winston! The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Steve Montenegro and Lou da Vinci.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice sprawl there from Rivera as Winston shoots in. Rivera displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Winston. Winston drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Check out the look on Winston's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Rivera regains half guard. Winston lands strikes from half guard. Winston controlling the action here. Rivera trying to control here.
This has been an exciting period of action! The referee calls for the fighters to work.
That's one minute gone in the round.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Winston fails with a takedown attempt. Marco Rivera has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dudley Winston. Winston tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Rivera defends well and Winston ends up having to push Rivera into the ropes where they will battle it out in the clinch. Rivera tries for a takedown but Winston manages to get underhooks.
Rivera jumps guard but Winston turns him against the ropes and keeps the fight standing. Winston comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush. The pace really dropping off here, momentarily. A short right from Winston on the inside.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Winston throws an elbow but it misses.
Rivera is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Winston is keeping busy. Nice elbow from Winston. Winston lands an elbow that stopped Rivera in his tracks for a moment.
It looks like Marco Rivera has been cut. Rivera tries to land a knee to the head but Winston blocks with his arms.
Winston pushes Rivera back against the ropes and lands a hook to the side of the head. Winston stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Rivera jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Winston walks away with a smile on his face. Rivera gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Rivera is breathing heavily. Rivera closes the distance and clinches up with Winston, looking for a takedown. Rivera pushes Winston against the ropes but Winston circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Winston is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Rivera's half guard.
Rivera is rocked! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Well, if Winston is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Oh Rivera is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Winston lands a nice short elbow.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Winston is taking a breather. Rivera says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Winston has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Winston scoring with strikes to the body and head. Winston with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Dudley Winston hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Winston gets a big slam - oh, Rivera is out! Rivera is out! That's a nasty KO!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:20 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Slam). Dudley Winston!
