PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Lucius Thornton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carl Riding (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Carl Riding will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 1, fighting out of London, Lucius Thornton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 1, fighting out of London, Carl Riding!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Glass and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Riding cracks Thornton with a good jab.
Riding misses with a leg kick

and Thornton counters by moving into the clinch.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Riding is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Riding breaks from the clinch.

Thornton clinches.
Thornton takes a shot to the head.
Riding lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Thornton could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Riding manages to break the clinch.
No joy there for Riding, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Riding fails to land with a series of punches.
Riding lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Riding throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Carl Riding seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Riding lands the left hand.

Riding drops Thornton with a left right combo! Riding follows him down to the ground into side control.


It looks like Lucius Thornton has been cut.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Riding tries to advance position but instead Thornton slips a leg back in to half guard.
Thornton might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Thornton looks like he's trying to stand up.
Riding sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Thornton defending well though.

Riding is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Thornton defends it well.
Riding takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Thornton is trying to stand.
Thornton trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Thornton is trying to control but Riding manages to pass to mount!
Riding trying to control but Thornton is having none of it.

Riding controlling his opponent.
Riding wants to control the pace but Thornton is squirming around nicely.
Riding unloads with some shots from mount but Thornton bucks and avoids them well.

Riding goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Thornton turns into him and now he's in Riding's guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Riding swinging wildly here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Thornton throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Nice uppercut there from Riding.
Riding shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Riding shoots in but Thornton avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Riding rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Thornton moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Riding throws a combination. Thornton tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Riding throws a right and a left that both miss.

Thornton shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Riding's guard.

Thornton controls from within his opponent's guard.
Thornton throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Riding works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Riding looking for a sweep. Not yet Riding, not yet.
Riding is breathing heavily.
Thornton's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Lucius Thornton wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Riding will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Thornton slips a jab and a cross from Riding.
Riding scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Carl Riding seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Riding lands a head shot.
Riding lands an overhand right.
Riding lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Thornton circles away quickly and effectively.
Riding takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Riding throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Riding stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Riding wants it to stay on the feet.

Riding avoids a kick to the body.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Thornton is defended easily by Riding.
Riding feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Thorntons jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Thornton.
Riding managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Thornton.

Thornton decides to stand back up.

Thornton gets a takedown into half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Thornton in particular looking to stall.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Lucius Thornton will probably get the nod.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Good standup being displayed there by Riding as he connects with a hook.

Nice jab there from Riding.
Riding uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Thornton has time to react.
Riding throws a series of punches but Thornton moves out of range.

Thornton looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Riding takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Thornton thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Thornton not doing much here.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Riding is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Thornton pulls his head out easily.

Thornton is working for a kimura but Riding is defending it quite comfortably.

Riding is staying active underneath Thornton, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Thornton wants to lay and pray for a moment but Riding keeps working.
Lucius Thornton overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Lucius Thornton wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Riding does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

Nice sprawl there from Riding as Thornton shoots in.
Thornton tries to clinch there but Riding circles away.
Thornton misses with a double jab
and Riding counters with a one-two to the body.
Riding misses with a two punch combination.
Riding will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Riding throws a big shot that misses.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Riding instigates a clinch.
Riding misses with some punches.
Thornton drops down looking for an ankle pick but Riding pulls his leg out and moves away.
Riding has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Riding shoots and misses

and Thornton holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Thornton fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Riding looking to throw knees to the head but Thornton is blocking nicely.
Thornton goes for a takedown attempt but Riding pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lucius Thornton. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Riding throws a right hand that Thornton ducks under and follows up with a left that Thornton also avoids with ease.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Carl Riding.
I think Riding has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
