PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Hank Cox (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Weiss Mike (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hank Cox!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Weiss Mike!
The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Shirou Masuda and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mike misses with a takedown

and Cox decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Mike's guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Cox's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Cox stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mike swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Mike wants to sweep here but Cox controlling him for the moment.
Cox trying to control but Mike is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mike pulls Cox in close to prevent any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Hank Cox just wasn't active enough.
Mike fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Cox avoids it really well and circles away.
Mike has a takedown stuffed.
Hank Cox has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Weiss Mike.

Mike lands with a nice body kick.
Nice sprawl there from Mike as Cox shoots in.
Mike fails with a takedown attempt.
Cox shoots for a takedown but Mike saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Cox really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Cox swings for the body but Mike moves out of range.
Cox shoots in looking for a takedown. Mike tries to sprawl out of it but Cox keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mike manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Mike gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Mike tries to pull guard but Cox won't allow it.
Cox looking to throw knees to the head but Mike is blocking nicely.

Mike pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Cox managing to block the knees to the body from Mike.

Mike is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Mike drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Cox gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Cox gets control of Mike's arms and successfully pulls guard. Cox will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Cox doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Mike got a little sloppy there for a moment and Cox has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mike has managed to get both his arms back between Cox's legs - danger averted.
Mike is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Cox is working an open guard so Mike takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Mike changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cox tries to avoid it but Mike manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Cox to the ground. Cox escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Mike is refusing to be controlled, as Cox sits in half guard.

Mike shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Cox as he avoids it easily.
Mike tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Cox paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Cox closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Mike quickly recovers to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mike is looking for a sweep. Cox is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Cox is looking to stand up but he'll have to free his leg first. Instead, Mike manages to get to full guard.
Cox landing some decent shots from guard.

Mike has his hands on Cox's head, controlling the position.
Cox sitting in guard here, content to control.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Mike throwing strikes off his back to little effect.

We're going to have a standup here because Hank Cox wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Mike throws a sloppy head kick and Cox moves out of range easily.

Cox shoots in looking for a takedown but Mike manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Cox's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Mike tries to close the distance and clinch up but Cox swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Mike lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.

Cox shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Mike pinned against the cage. Mike gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Mike throws a series of punches but Cox moves out of range.
Mike is breathing heavily.
Mike fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Cox avoids it really well and circles away.

Mike closes the distance and pushes Cox back into the cage.
Cox tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hank Cox. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mike doesn't manage to clinch there - Cox circles away.

Mike dives in and scores a takedown into Cox's guard.
Mike postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Cox wants to stand but Mike is controlling the position.
Cox will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Mike wants to control from the top but Cox keeps moving.
Hank Cox overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Weiss Mike wasn't active enough on the ground.
Mike tries for a takedown but Cox circles away easily
and Mike takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

and Mike makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Cox slaps away a takedown attempt from Mike, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Mike avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

and Cox counters by clinching up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Weiss Mike showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Mike is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

Cox can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Mike is looking to escape.

Cox lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Cox lands a nice shot to the head.
Mike is desperately trying to improve his position but Cox has a good base and remains in mount.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
