PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Damian Richmond (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ricky Lawler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Damian Richmond!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ricky Lawler!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Lawler looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Lawler throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Richmond tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Lawler is in Richmond's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Lawler postures up.

Lawler got a little sloppy there for a moment and Richmond has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Lawler has managed to get both his arms back between Richmond's legs - danger averted.
Richmond looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Lawler wants to control from the top but Richmond keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Ricky Lawler.
Horrible takedown by Lawler or perhaps it was just good defense by Richmond which made him look bad.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Richmond enables Lawler to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Richmond manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Lawler wants to control from the top but Richmond keeps moving.

Richmond has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Richmond has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Richmond controls Lawler momentarily but Lawler frees himself.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

We're going to have a standup here because Damian Richmond wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Lawler fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Richmond misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Lawler wants to clinch up but Richmond keeps it at a distance.
Richmond throws a series of punches but Lawler moves out of range.

Richmond is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Lawler is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Richmond is keeping busy.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Richmond shoots in for a takedown but Lawler shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Richmond changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Lawler tries to avoid it but Richmond manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Lawler to the ground. Lawler escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Damian Richmond. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Lawler fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Richmond sprawls well initially but Lawler persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Lawler connects with a nice short shot to Richmond's temple.

Lawler stays in close to Richmond's body and controls the position.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Richmond is on top in guard.

Richmond slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Lawler tries to control but Richmond manages to take his back.
Richmond tries to get the hooks in deep but Lawler pushed the leg off.

Lawler manages to reverse the position and now he's in Richmond's guard. Nice work there by Lawler.
Lawler is breathing heavily.
Richmond is controlling Lawler's posture.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Ricky Lawler showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Richmond's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Lawler takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Richmond avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Richmond shoots in but Lawler avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Richmond throws out a powerful jab.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Richmond.

Richmond shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Lawler pinned against the cage. Lawler gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

and Lawler makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.

Lawler closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

The referee asks Lawler politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Lawler prefers to stall for the moment though.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Richmond gets caught napping as Lawler dives in and scores a takedown. Richmond manages to retain guard.

Lawler chips away with some ground and pound.
Lawler trying to control but Richmond is working from the bottom.

Richmond working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lawler doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lawler manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lawler is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Ricky Lawler comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Lawler has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
