0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tommy Lynch! The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Albert Achterberg and Radbod Blank.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Lynch moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Ouch! a nice leg kick from Penn, right into the meat.
Lynch blocks a leg kick. BJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Lynch dodges the punch combination from Penn.
Lynch avoids the head kick by Penn.
Penn throws a body punch but Lynch moves out of range. Penn lands with a nice body kick. Penn misses with a few strikes there.
Penn misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Penn feints a jab promting Lynch to slip. Penn then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Lynch slips again and ducks right into an uppercut. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Penn will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Penn tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Penn throws a half hearted mid kick. Penn pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way. Penn throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Penn misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Penn is breathing heavily. Lynch thows a body shot but no joy. Penn lands with a thumping leg kick.

Penn throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean. BJ Penn is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Penn lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Lynch at a distance.
Lynch avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Penn pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Lynch back to the cage. Penn follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver. Penn misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
A momentary lapse in concentration from Penn enables Lynch to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Penn manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Lynch not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Lynch throwing strikes but missing.

Lynch shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Penn napping and manages to drive through into side control! You can see the frustration on Penn's face as Lynch controls the position. It looks like Lynch might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. This has been an exciting period of action! Lynch tries to move to mount but Penn blocks the move with his legs. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Penn seems a little lost for a moment, as Lynch dominates the positioning. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Tommy Lynch. Penn is looking to clinch but Lynch is avoiding it.
A head kick misses from Penn. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lynch dives in and scores a takedown into Penn's guard. Lynch controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Lynch stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Penn swivels though and keeps the full guard. Lynch not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Penn has his foot on Lynch's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Lynch works his way back into a safe position though. Lynch with a flurry of punches that miss. Lynch is stalling in the full guard.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Tommy Lynch hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Penn throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Lynch manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. A head kick misses from Penn. Penn lands a big head kick that sends Lynch tumbling to the mat! Penn takes a step backwards and waves Lynch back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Lynch is rocked! Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Penn misses with a two punch combination.
Lynch is still on wobbly legs! Can Penn finish him? Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Penn throws a right hand that Lynch ducks under and follows up with a left that Lynch also avoids with ease. Penn throws a head kick that misses. Lynch blocks a head kick by Penn.
Penn is looking to wear down Lynch with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment. A combination from Penn does no damage. Penn tries to bum rush Lynch with a series of wild strikes but Lynch uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Penn is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Lynch. Penn tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Penn misses with a hook. Lynch ducked under it nicely. Penn swinging wildly here.

Penn can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Lynch controls the pace. Lynch throws a big right hand that misses.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Lynch. Penn being controlled for a moment. Let's hope that Lynch has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Penn is looking to regain half guard here but Lynch keeps moving and retains side control. The referee asks Lynch politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Lynch prefers to stall for the moment though.
